Allergic To Prednisone Help Information in Questions
Is it normal to retain water when taking prednisone to prevent an allergic reaction to ct scan contrast? I had to take 15 prednisone within 13 hrs of my scan 2 days ago and have gained 4lbs of water wt and my hands and face feel very swollen/bloated. I feel like a blimp...also my blood pressure was extremely high. I wonder if it is all related...any one else gone through this? thanks for any ideas ;)

Laura M replied: "yes prednisone will make you retain water. When people take large amounts of prednisone or are on prednisone for a long period of time they will gain weight and they look bloated. But as soon as it gets out of your system yur weight gain will go away"

dusty replied: "Wow - that's a lot of prednisone. And yes, it will make you blow up like a big dog. I had to take it for a week for an asthma attack. I gained 10 lbs., bruised if you looked at me hard, was euphoric at first, then depressed, blood pressure skyrocketed (from all that water retention) - blah, blah, blah... Prednisone can really help you when you need it but what a crazy bunch of side effects! And hope you never have to take it long-term. Corticosteroids over the long haul break down tissue and do more damage than good, IMHO. (Some doctors may disagree about the "more damage than good" but I don't think anyone can deny that long-term use does lots of damage.) So, yes, it's all related and the weight will drain off when the meds get out of your system."

I have to take 10mg of prednisone for 12 days for a allergic reaction 6 pills the first day 5 the next until ? I'm finished. Will taking it for 12 days make me gain weight? I do not want to gain any weight!!! Do the pills actually make you gain weight or is it the amount of food you eat? Because is says it make you more hungary.

I Vote Joe replied: "You won't gain weight because you won't be on them long enough. If they do make you hungry, try to watch what you put in your mouth (try a piece of fruit, some sort of veggie or some crackers) and try to drink water instead. You should be fine. Don't fret."

Carolanne M replied: "Prednisone causes you to gain water weight, not actual weight. And you have to be on them for a while for this to take effect! Dont worry about it because whenever I have an asthma attack, they put me on it for weeks at a time. Just take water pills and you should be fine. But please finish your dosing like your doc prescribed..."

40something replied: "I have been on prednisone just like what you are describing 2 times - I did not gain any weight either time. I did notice a slight increase in my appetite so I just drank more water and ate a piece of fruit to kill the feeling. I did get very warm at times and feel a little edgy. That was for the first 3-5 days then it gradually got better. Good Luck!"

Vinyl replied: "OMG! Yes!! You could get huge sweetie! I'm speaking from experience!!!! I will NEVER again take cortico-steroids! They make an enzyme that is catabolic, meaning no matter if you don't eat (I ate almost nothing) it eats up your muscles and dissolves them while making body fat at a crazy rate! (real fast)! Bottom line: a year later, my body is no longer hard, even my neck is soft and my back is all flabby! I was always thin and hard body now it's almost impossible to reverse! I wanted to die and I almost did because I quit the steroids and went in a coma. I wish I could go back and NEVER take them! What kind of allergic reaction is it? For allergies I use Activated Quercetin from Source Naturals. I'd try that first. Good lucks sweetie!"

if my dog got her liver swollen after taking prednisone does that means she is allergic to all steroids? ISCUZ AM KIND OF SCARED CUZ MY DOG WAS PRESCRIBED AN ANTIFUNGAL TABLETS CALLED KETOCONAZOLE half tablet 2 times daily and i saw the side effects and am confused do those side effects will come for sure or is it only in some cases?

Loves Dogs replied: "Not necessarily. Prednisone is the devil drug and no person or animal should ever have to take it. It has destroyed my Grandma and almost killed my uncle. It is a horrible drug. If my vet tried to put my dog on it - he would just have to find another drug or I'd find another vet."

oregano13 replied: "Not necessarily, there are several different types of steroids. Prednisone is a Corticosteroid. Prednisone also has notoriously bad side effects in some people and animals. It's possible for a dog (or person) to be allergic to one type of a class of medications and not another. The vet can tell you if there are other treatment options for your dogs. Add: Side effects are just things that MAY happen, it doesn't mean they WILL happen."

TonyLovesFairies replied: "May not. But prednisone is the most overprescribed drug there is. And probably most harmful as well. Perhaps seek a holistic vet? May be worth it. Best of luck!!"

Swamp Poodles *WWTD* replied: "The thing about mentioned side effects- is that ANYTHING a patient experiences during a drug's clinic trial is listed as a "side effect"- some of the things listed, really, are not related to the medication. But, by standards, they have to all be listed. That being said- steroids have a TON of side effects- if they weren't such a wonder drug- and beneficial to so many conditions, they would be banned. There is no way to know whether a side effect will hit your dog or not. If you have a concern about a medication your dog is on- please discuss it with your vet. Only your vet can help you way the risks/benefits of any medication."

;) replied: "Mammals are not allergic to steroids. An enlarged liver can be a side effect of anabolic steroids, but it usually happens with long term use. I have never heard of it in corticosteroids. They are actually used to treat enlarged livers."

Allergic Reaction on Face prednisone? So I had a allergic reaction to something and my face and ears, got red and bumpy. I went to the doctor, she prescibed 5 days worth of prednisone and a steriod cream for my face. Yesterday was my last day on the prednisone and today my symptoms are returning. I'm still using the cream and I don't think I can afford to go back to the doctor. Any suggestions.

tonalc1 replied: "Go back to the doctor, rather than seeking medical advice from anonymous strangers."

opal1331 replied: "Yes to the suggestion, see a "Dermatologist", not just a regular MD, and I don't understand the two forms of steroids at once. Prednisone is a steroid also. If an allergic reaction caused this misery to start with, then some sort of antihistamine would have been a better choice, like Benadryl or Chlor Trimeton."

i took avalox and prednisone yesterday and had an allergic reaction? how do i know if the prednisone didn't cause it? they said it was the avalox.prescribed me zithromax and prednisone again and how safe are the two? can i really even get an allergic reaction or die from prednisone what are the chances?

the_advisor replied: "I personally had an allergic reaction to Avelox and it was the scariest thing ever,I had night sweats, tremors and hallucinations.after only one pill! NEVER AGAIN.You should read some of the horror stories at this website Avelox is a horrible horrible drug and really needs to be taken off the market! What are the possible side effects of moxifloxacin? Stop using moxifloxacin and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: rapid or pounding heartbeat; diarrhea that is watery or bloody; hallucinations, depression, thoughts of suicide; fainting or seizure (convulsions); liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, sudden stomach pain, severe fatigue); or sudden pain or swelling near your joints (especially in your arm or ankle). Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Talk with your doctor if you have any of these side effects: mild nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain; dizziness, confusion; or nervousness, anxiety, sleep problems. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome. If you have diarrhea while using moxifloxacin, call your doctor before using any medicine to stop the diarrhea, especially if it is watery or contains blood."

new tattoo - allergic to a&d - prednisone? I just got a new tattoo (my 1st tattoo) 5 days ago and the tattoo artist told me to put a&d ointment on while it was healing for the first few days. I did and on the 3rd day i realized i had an allergic rxn to the ointment. I went to another tattoo place and they told me to put aquaphor on it so i would not break out anymore. The reaction includes red itchy dots all where i put the a&d. I was wondering if anyone knew if its okay to take prednisone while this is happening? I think it would reduce the reaction (i have prednisone from a previous sickness) or would it interfere?

Siggie replied: "use lotion its just making u break out mine did it too jellys r too thick for me it cloggs my pores"

timberleigh replied: "Use a plain unscented body lotion such as glaxal base or lubriderm."

Rob F replied: "See a doctor. 5 days old, you should be able to use any unscented, alcohol free lotion such a lubriderm or eucerine."

court! replied: "use curel unscented lotion it works really good. i have four tattoos and i never used any kind of ointment just curel and all mine healed great!=]"

Shanna replied: "I used generic antibiotic ointment on mine. Always worked great. I wouldn't use prednisone though. While it may help reduce inflammation, I would hesitate to use a steroid unless absolutely necessary. They can cause unwanted side effects."

Judy W6012000 replied: "NO! NO! NO! predisone is nothing to play with, i have been on it for arthritis for years. predisone is serious stuff. i would back off of using things to put on it, and just keep it clean. if you are having an allergic reaction, i would think you would need to let the spot to calm down. you might have to go to a dr, if it doesn't start to act right."

rocketwife replied: "No, do not use the Prednisone, it will affect the way the tattoo heals. Use Aveeno Baby lotion for your tattoo. It is a very mild lotion with no fragrances or aloe. It will keep the tattoo moist and allow it to breathe so that it can heal. Aquaphor is great to use too, but, the Aveeno is much more mild. Best wishes."

malgal replied: "im having the exact same problem on my first tattoo too. im not sure about the prednisone, but i switched to a completely non scented lotion and fragrance free non scented soap and that seems to be helping"

Trillium replied: "Absolutely not! Do not use prednisone for this. Prednisone is a steroid that admittedly promotes tissue regeneration, but it has some serious pharmokinetics too. Abandon this idea! for mild allergic reactions I take benadryl..it blocks histamine production...that is a major constituent of the immune response... and it usually works fine. If it doesn't resolve very soon, see your doctor."

Prednisone?!?!?!?!?!? I was prescribed prednisone after having an allergic reaction to Bactrim. They gave me one dose in the ER and than told me to take it for five days... Sense I started taking the predinisone I have had like severe insomnia and I don't feel tired at all. I kinda feel manic. Is that normal? On a side note I just realized they messed up at the pharmacy and gave me 42 pills when It says on the bottel and on my paper work. Should I call the pharmacy and tell them?

Lucky replied: "well first off, when i had prednisone, i wasnt insomnic, but i did do weird things. i tried to run upstairs yelling for food, not knowing what i was doing. so maybe its a side effect. and yes, tell the pharmacy they gave you too many. it helps them out a lot."

Prednisone..Hpw long wll it take for Prednisone to get rid of my rash from an allergic reaction? I have a severe rash from head to toe from using Bactrim. It started out very red and bumpy. After using it 2 days the bumps are gone but I still have the redness all over

Lori K replied: "The steroid, prednisone, is fairly quick acting. Be aware of the side effects and don't take for longer than 7 days. Short-term side effects, as with all glucocorticoids, include high blood glucose levels, especially in patients who already have diabetes mellitus or are on other medications that increase blood glucose (such as tacrolimus), and mineralocorticoid effects such as fluid retention. Additional short-term side effects include insomnia, euphoria and rarely mania. Long-term side effects include Cushing's syndrome, weight gain, osteoporosis, glaucoma, type II diabetes mellitus, and depression upon withdrawal. Ocular side effects of glucocorticoids include glaucoma and cataract formation. While most commonly associated with topical or intraocular administration, these ocular complications may also occur with oral, intravenous, or even inhaled administration."

DizziDazi replied: "I don't know how severe your reaction was. My mother had a SEVERE rxn not too long ago. The skin even peeled from the inside of her ears and the bottoms of her feet. It was awful. The prednisone cleared her skin up in 3-4 weeks, but it took over 6mos for her hair to stop thinning and for new growth to appear. This was a steven's johnson's type reaction. If you could give the type of reaction, it would be more helpful. Best Wishes. Hope it clears up soon."

Neil L replied: "Just a few days. The prednisone stops the body from reacting to the allergen."

kathleen l replied: "It shouldn't take long but be aware that you must wean off the drug. Do not stop taking it suddenly or your condition could come back big time."

How long do the side effects of prednisone last once you have stopped the medication? I was prescribed prednisone after getting an allergic reaction to peanuts. I was to take this medication in a mild dosage twice a day for 5 days. I have completed my dose, but I'm still experiencing nausea, abdominal pain, shakes, migraines, dizziness, weakness, and mood swings two days after completing the dose. Does anybody know how long these side effects last? and is it normal? No, the doctor did not tell me to taper this medication off because it is a mild dose.

Kiara replied: "I believe that it can stay in your system for a couple of days after and up to a week at the worst I am not positive, but I think that is how long it is in your system."

beernotcider replied: "The side effects from prednisone are many and varied, but should go away in about a week after stopping the meds. By the way , did your doctor notrecommend a tapering-off the prednisone ?"

Christy replied: "Most medicines stay in your system anywhere between a couple of days to a couple of weeks after you take them. Im assuming that because the medicine was kinda "instant" relief it wont take a couple of weeks. *by instant I mean you dont take it for weeks before it helps."

How long do I wait before asking my doctor about prednisone-related joint pain? I have been on prednisone for 9 days for an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. I have three more days at the lowest dose (10 mg). Today I have been experiencing increasing joing pain in my hands, wrists, and fingers. I don't want to overreact -- is this normal? Will it get better in a day or two, or do I need to contact my doctor now? Everything I've read about joint pain has to do with long-term prednisone usage, not a short course like mine.

school_papers replied: "Any reaction to a medication is worth immediately telling your doctor. He'll tell you if it's serious or not. Call first, ask by phone, then go in if necessary."

tah_map replied: "Common side effects to Pred include increased appetite, indigestion and nervousness. Less frequent side effects include joint pain, darkening or lightening of skin color, dizziness, flushing in face or cheeks, spinning sensation, etc. If these continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor."
