About Effects Of Zofran On Pregnancy in Answers
Has anyone had to take Zofran for morning sickness for their entire pregnancy? Currently I'm 17-1/2 weeks. I have been taking the Zofran that I was prescribed since about 10 weeks - my morning sickness was so severe I couldn't keep liquids down. I've had to take it once a day since then, right when I get up, and I have found that if I do not take it I get really sick. My last attempt to stop taking it was Friday, and I threw up for three hours, until I was finally able to get a dose in me and have it stay down. I know my doctor would never have prescribed the drug - or the amount of it she's allowed me, which is 40 pills a month - unless she felt it was to my and my baby's benefit, but I'm concerned I'm going to have to rely on it until I give birth. I'm happy with the results, as it keeps me from getting sick and hasn't produced any side effects, and I've been able to gain back some of the 15lbs. I lost in the first trimester. Has anyone had to take Zofran their entire pregnancy, and what was the outcome?

theosharatos replied: "I'm not sure of that brand prescription but my last pregnancy I had to take phenegran because I was just as sick as you are. I took them for about 6 months and as I can see it did not affect the baby. Now with this pregnancy, which is my 4th, I was just as sick as before. I didn't want to take the med this time so I just dealt with the sickness and i finally got over it after 6 months. Now in my last trimester, I just stopped getting sick one day. Do a search on line. I'm sure you will find plenty of stuff to read that people have to say about your med. Jennifer"

Chanda replied: "I too took Zofran not he entire pregnancy but most of it. You may find down the road that you wont need it. After I think about the 6-7 month I would have periodic sickness so I would take on those moments. DOnt worry you dr wouldnt have given it to you like you said if it was unsafe. Good luck I feel for you on the sickness I lost 12 lbs also."

Samantha N replied: "yes, I've taken it with 2 of my pregnancies and the outcome was a healthy happy baby! (and me not wasting away or passing out from complete dehydration) It's fine, you have to get some relief and be able to survive the pregnancy!"

Anyone been put on Zofran for nausea/vomiting in pregnancy? I am 15 weeks and was prescribed Zofran yesterday. Since I've been taking it, my stomach and lower back kind of cramp, like I'm about to start my period or something and I didn't know if that was normal for the meds or maybe just coincidentally my back/stomach started hurting when I took the meds. Did you have to stay on the medicine for the rest of the pregnancy? Any other side effects?

gumby replied: "I have been on zofran in all 3 of my pregnancies and I never cramped. I would think that's a coincidence, but I would still talk to your doctor about it. If you're like me, you're so nauseous that you haven't been hungry. Maybe the zofran is abating the nausea enough that those cramps are really hunger pains. It took me a long time in all of my pregnancies to realize that I was hungry. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me. Good luck."

batmantis1999 replied: "My sister-in-law was put on this when she was pregnant. She had a little back pain, but that was about it. If you're cramping, even a little, call your doctor. Better to be safe than sorry."

S. O. replied: "I didn't take zofran, I took compezine, so I don't know about your cramping. I just wanted to say I took the compezine for about 3 months and then when my prescription ran out I decided to try going without for a week before refilling it. I never had to go back on it. I didn't start taking it until I was about 2 or 3 months pregnant and stopped around 6 months. You might be able to go without it or you might have to stay on it for the whole pregnancy, every pregnancy is different and there's no telling what your hormones will do to you in the coming months."

bakken girl replied: "they put me on it but it made me even more sick than before, so i went off of it. talk to your doc!"

Momof 1and1ontheway replied: "I was on diclectin and it didint work for me. usually those types of pills are a combination of antihistamines and B vitamins. You cramps could be round ligament pains. I've had them since 6 weeks and i am now 20 weeks."

baby momma Drama replied: "Yes i was on it but I had no side effects sorry I'm of no help! Maybe try figuring out if something is targeting it. For example I craved cereal and I would have 2-3 bowls and the next day I wouldn't be able 2 hold down even Popsicles. I was in and out the hospital for dehydration from week 9-20 till I in pointed it was the milk that was causing it and turns out my son is allergic to milk (not lactose their both different)"

Does anyone use Zofran for Nausea during pregnancy? Do most doctors prescribe it easily? What have your side effects been?

froggy replied: "I have and it works!! The dr gave it because I am allergic to the other drugs. It is expensive though. But worth it. Insurance wil only pay for 10 a month. That's not even one a day!! Weird. No side effects for me."

Kim B replied: "well i was given zofran for severe morning sickness told to take 1 4mg tablet every 4 hours, well insurance only pays for 24 in a 25 day period, and after that the bottle of 24 is 700 bucks! well I ended up not doing well on it anyway still losing weight so they put me on a zofran pump, stick yourself in the leg every day and get the meds like an iv all day no break i do get a little dizzy and a small headache from it"

MishMash replied: "I did and it was a life saver. I had terrible nausea for 10 weeks with my daughter. At first they wanted to give me suppositories because they didn't think I would be able to keep the Zofran pill down, but they did not work at all. The Zofran did. Constipation is a side effect, but I was told I could take a Colace every day. It is expensive, that is why I used the generic, which worked great."

Sweet Pea <3 replied: "YES YES YES! I wouldve been lost without it! Used it for about 4 months. I had my first appt and i told him how sick i was, and at my next one (4wks later) i told him it had not gotten any better infact worse, and he prescribed that."

For people who have used Zofran in Pregnancy? I've been taking Zofran for nausea during my pregnancy after trying Reglan and Phenigran. Both those didn't work, so my Doc put me on this. The first 3-4 days I thought this was a miracle drug, I could finally keep food down and felt great, but then the severe stomach cramps, bloating, constipation and bad headaches set in (all the side effects). I stopped taking it for a week or so to ease up these things, and then got the vomiting back so of course was miserable. Now I've worked out just taking it in the mornings and it seems to work pretty good but I still can't get rid of the other symptoms (tried milk of magnesia, colace etc) and the box actually says to take every 6 hours all the time even if you feel fine. Should I keep taking this and suffer the rest, or what? Help lol. Or should I just get off everything and be miserable enough where it's extremely difficult to make it through the whole day @ work and I'm always running to the bathroom? Sorry to be graphic lol. - I have spoken to the Doc about the symptoms I am having, she says they are normal for this drug and to do what I think is best for me. And I don't know how I feel lol.

tessa46 replied: "better see a doctor, have you tried eating crackers, and drink sprite it settles your stomach"

julz_shelton replied: "I used zofran only after phenergan didn't work. I really only got constipated. If I had any other side effects I don't remember because I was just so happy to not throw up. Go to helpher.org. It's dedicated totally to hyperemesis. They have a very supportive online community, and you could get some tips on how to deal with the side effects maybe. You might not need to take as much as what it says. I weaned off by the time I hit 4-5 months and didn't need it after that, but still vomited only once every morning the entire preg. (A small price to pay for round the clock) Every womans hyperemesis is different, just experiment. Good luck.. I've been there. It was all worth it though :) OMG Don't listen to people that recommend crackers.. they don't understand this isn't morning sickness. None of that "crackering" bs worked for me.. ginger ale, seabands, crackers, peppermint, ginger.. you name it, I tried it."

momma2b replied: "I did take the generic version of Zofran and I thought it was the miracle drug too... but I didnt experience any of the side effects, expect I have headaches now but my morning sickness is long gone.. If I were you I would call your dr and talk to them. Tell them the symptoms you are having... the only thing that isnt a pregnancy symptom as well is the stomach cramps... I mean you have growing pains, but I would be concerned about the cramps... You can take tylenol to help with the headaches, and my prenatal vitamin has a stool softner in it so that helps with the constipation... but dont feel bad about calling your dr they are there for YOU otherwise... with out their patients they wouldnt have an office! Good luck!!!"

Mommy Due 8/12/08 replied: "Ok, I'm at 26 weeks now and I've taken Zofran in the beginning because my morning sickness was MISERABLE for me. My doctor prescribed it to me and it's totaly safe. I would say keep taking it if you are miserable, you don't need to be in misery. My morning sickness ease at 12weeks exactly so I didn't need it anymore. I hope this helps."

Junebug - Due 6/16/08 replied: "I took Zofran at the beginning of my pregnancy too because I was sooooo sick. It worked like a charm, I didn't take it all the time though. I didn't notice experiencing any side effects, although I may have and just chalked it up to feeling horrible because I was pregnant. Good luck and congrats on the pregnancy. I hope your sickness goes away soon, I know how aweful you feel!"

purpose82 replied: "I am currently 21 weeks pregnant. I also had horrible all day morning sickness and went to the ER 3x for dehydration and my Dr. put me on Reglan and Phenigran which didn't work and just made me feel drugged. I ended up losing 13lbs and I was finally put on Zofran and I used it for about a month taking the pills 2x a day, towards the end of my 1st trimester I was only taking 1 a day. Long story short I had to stay on Zofran until my 16th or 17th week of pregnancy and I did suffer from horrible constipation from in which I was prescribed a stool softener, but did not have any cramps. For years I have suffered from headaches so nothing changed there. Now I feel great, no morning sickness and I actually have a appettite( a healthy one at that). But I would talk to your dr. all in all it depends on what you can handle, my morning sickness was hurting my baby more because I could never eat and felt exhausted, versus the meds that helped me to actually eat and drink. I'm not sure how far along you are in your pregnancy but for most women the nausea subsides after the 1st trimester. But again I would also try the crackers, peppermint tea. You MUST eat something as soon as you wake up (crackers, dry cereal, ginger helps and with me sour things would help) But I understand exactly what your going through, but now at 21 weeks I am eating, have energy, no sickness at all and my daughter is healthy and growing at a good rate. Good Luck"

lukluvamy replied: "Hi! I also had severe morning sickness (which was really 24/7 sickness) and they put me on Zofran first off all. I took it every 6-8 hours just like it said, and it helped a little bit, but I was still getting sick. Then about after a week of taking it, I got severely constipated. I had to go to the bathroom, I just couldnt, I was miserable. I decided Id go off the Zofran to see if it helped with the constipation (I read that constipation was a side effect) and after a few days with not taking it, I was finally able to go (what a relief!). (Its hard to believe some of the things we take for granted when we cant go! Hehe.) I told my doctor and they put me on Phenigren. It worked ok, but I didnt like it because it makes me so sleepy. I decided to just stick it out and only take the Phenigren when I absolutely had to, and thankfully, my sickness started easing up around 17 weeks. Now I dont take anything at all hardly (some days I might take a half of a phenigren). Its hard to pick between having the side effects of the medicine, and being so sick, I know what you are going through and it is a tough decision! How far along are you? If you are a little further along, you might could try not taking the meds and seeing if the nausea will ease up on its own shortly. Thats what I done and thank God it eased up some. Im sorry Im not much help, but I wish you the best and Ill pray for you (and the baby too!) Have a great day and hope you feel better! 25 weeks with me and my husbands first!"

plz plz answ is there anyone who took zofran the entire pregnancy and have a healthy baby.? am taking zofran the entire pregancy bcoz still have vomiting and now in 37th week now am so much afraid tat it may have any effect on my baby please please ans my ques

M. V replied: "I took Zofran when I was pregnant with my daughter. It is a Category B, which means it is generally regarded as safe during pregnancy and there have been no reports of negative results to the fetus. She is a happy and healthy 2 year old."

rats_and_atheism replied: "Yeah, its healthy apart from the fact its heads on backwards."

Amber G replied: "i take zofran and reglan together...and zantac..and zoloft...did it with my 2 daughters too..they are perfectly fine!!!these meds are perfectly safe during pregnancy baby will be fine dont worry."

nelly5nell replied: "im taking it now. i dont think the dr would prescribe something that would hurt the baby"

babedoll_18_01 replied: "Yes I did. My son is healthy and happy with no problems. I understand the concern as it is a chemo type drug but the research they have done shows no harm to the fetus and it is considered safe during pregnancy. It is a lot safer than throwing up and becoming dehydrated and malnourished since the baby needs all the nutrients they can get. I couldn't worry about taking it. I never had any second thoughts and like i said, my son is healthy and 2 years old now."

Has anyone else had to take the anti nausea meds during pregnancy? I have to go on zofran yesterday. I couldn't stop getting sick at all for several days. Today I feel a ittle better but I keep getting tummy aches which it lists as a side effect. Has anyone else taken this or similar med? If so when does the nausea fully go away so I can eat food again, and when do the tummy pains stop??????????

win4me replied: "yes had to take the same thing and i also ate tums like candy i carried a bottle of the berry tums with me and had to eat pretty much all the time as soon as my stomach was empty i was ready to hurl. so i ate grapes and crackers and yogart, drank lots of water the worst was when i would try to sleep. Go luck!"

vieveia replied: "I am on that. The way to somewhat avoid the side effects is not to drink any water for like a half an hour after you take it which sucks because it tastes nasty. It helped alot the first day I took it and then there were days that it seemed the sickness was stronger than the drugs. I don't think it ever completely took away the nausea but it made it manageable. Also I had to take mine very sparingly because my insurance would only cover 10 pills every 30 days so be aware of that possibility."

happy replied: "I had to take something similar. It was an anti nausea drug combined with a relaxant drug which helped my tummy aches. Stay away from the Tums you do not want to take those, even if you have bad heartburn or upset stomach, they're not good for you. Stick with milk for heartburn if you have it. For the nausea, try sucking on hard candy it really helped me! As for the tummy pains going away, well that doesn't happen til the baby is born. Just keep as relaxed as possible and that will make things easier on you. Congrats!"

pregnacny sickness and zofran? I was just put on zofran because I have been so sick with my 3rd pregnancy. Can anyone tell me their expierences being on zofran while pregnant. Did it have any side effects? And did it work for you? Thanks!

Jess-me replied: "I was also on Zofran. It is the best. It works fast, doesn't taste bad, and will really help. I had no side effects with it. Good luck!!!"

bb replied: "I've been taking Zofran almost daily for 5 weeks. I have been so nauseous. I am still nauseous on Zofran, but it does help. Also it seems to wear off quickly. I find Phenergan to be better at reducing nausea, but it makes me SO tired so I take Zofran during the day. It's very easy to take, and the only side effect I've noticed is constipation. I had to get a stool softener, and I try to walk every day and drink lots of water. I can't wait for the nausea to go away so I can stop the Zofran. Constipation is terrible, and I've never had that problem! Good luck."

Christy E replied: "I agree with the previous poster in that while I did not find Zofran nearly as effective as Phenergan, I liked that it did not cause any side effects, especially the incredibly drowsiness like the Phenergan. Zofran took the edge of the nausea so that I was able to function. Best of luck to you!"

Zofran- What are your experiences? A little background on me- In my last pregnancy I threw up the entire nine months. My doctor never put me on Zofran or anything else because I didn't complain enough and I was always just barely gained enough at each appointment. In the last few weeks of the pregnancy she admitted that she should have put me on it. Now I am 9 weeks pregnant with my second child and so far I am having similar experiences. She said that she would put me on it whenever I ask but I am not sure it it is needed just yet. So I have some questions to those that have been on it to help me decide. Why did your doctor put you on it? (excessive weight loss? dehydration? etc) Did it help with the nausea and the vomiting? When did you start taking it? How long did you take it? Did you have any side effects? Thanks in advance- You will be really helping me out. I throw up morning, noon and night with nausea on and off. I had no idea that they didn't help all day. I right now I can hold down water and mint tea, but I have been throwing up part of every meal lately. But that is the same as my last pregnancy.

Bluntly Blondie replied: "Zofran does help, but it is not as nearly as good as Phenergan. To me Zofran only was a temporary fix for the vomiting (2-3 hours). Zofran is VERY expensive and some insurances will not cover it. They do have a generic out now. Zofran was first used to help cancer patients during treatment for vomiting. Call your insurance and make sure it is covered. Phenergan is wonderful, works for several hours....the only downfall...it makes you a walking Zombie. You are so very tired as if you had taken Benadryl or a sleep aid. They have Phenergan tablets, liquid and also a cream to rub on your wrist that works very well. They also have Reglan which is used for vomiting. This would be my personal choice. No bad side effects....wont knock you out , and it actually works for several hours. Congrats on your pregnancy, and take care of yourself."

mad92300 replied: "I started Zofran when I was 8 weeks pregnant because I was throwing up twice a day at least. Yes it helped w/nausea but it gave me stomach aches, which were sometimes worse than throwing up. I only took it for a couple weeks, mainly because when I ran out my ins wouldn't refill it, and 10 pills cost $400+ It did help on the days when even water made me throw up. My daughter was born full term and very healthy, so it didn't affect her at all! Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy"

Ashley replied: "Was a life saver!!!! I actually got a prescription for it when I went to the ER for dehydration. It helped with the throwing up but still had nausea in the 1st and 2nd trimesters. I stopped taking it about 16-18 weeks.. And I had no side effects!"

Italian Momma replied: "i just had my 5th child and each pregnancy i was horribly sick the doctor reccomended zofran and it helped a great deal... i took it for about 3 months no really side affect to think of .. i just remember thinking i should of had this a long time ago instead of feeling horrible through my whole pregnancies.. all of them i was hospitalized and weighed only 98 pounds.. so get the doc to give you this you'll be glad you did... good luck i know how it feels so take care of your self and that baby..."

Valerie replied: "I started taking it right after my 1st OB appt. (8 weeks). I was lucky to have that appt. with the OB that delivered my son, so he knows me pretty well, and knows that I'm not a whiner. I told him that I was getting sick about 5 times a day, and that I couldn't focus at work or take care of my son because I was so nauseous. He gave me a script for Zofran twice a day as needed for two months. I took the medication once most days, and sometimes twice, until I was about 15 weeks, and then I started taking it once every other day or so, as needed. At 18 weeks, the morning sickness had for the most part gone away. The Zofran worked wonders!!!! I was able to get on with my life as needed. Even with the medication, there were a lot of times that I felt nauseous, and I threw up a few times, but it was a huge improvement over what I had been feeling! Next time I see that OB, I am bringing him a gift. The only side effect I had was the headaches, which they warn you about on the label. Totally manageable. It also says it can cause drowsiness, but I always felt more energetic after taking it."

cnljones03 replied: "Zofran is the most wonderful drug I have ever taken. My first pregnancy I was sick the entire time also, I was having to go in and get IV's because I would get so dehydrated. I took it daily. I had to. I love the ODT(Orally Disintegrating Tablet) , the flavor is not great but it dissolves so fast that it works really well and you don't have to worry about throwing up a pill you just took. I just found out I am expecting my second baby and had my script for Zofran filled yesterday. I started out on phenergan but for some reason I had severe side effects. Zofran is better anyways b/c it doesn't make you drowsy like Phenergan. So, to answer your questions 1 by 1. They put me on it because I could not get through the day without it. It sooo helps with nausea and vomiting. I started taking it when I was about 12 weeks preg. I took it the entire pregnancy. No side effects what so ever, just relief. I highly suggest it. Hope this helps. Oh, and I plainly told my Doc you can write me 4mg but I gaurantee that I will be taking 8mg the majority of the time. So, he gave me 8 mg (you can break them in half) and I can take them up to 3 times a day. Congrats, and maybe you won't be as sick this time."

alexias mommy replied: "I was on ZOFRAN the whole first trimester and then some. I had to be hospitalized for dehydration because I couldn't even keep water down....I was lucky if I was getting one saltine cracker down a DAY! I was throwing up at least 6-7 times a day but usually about 15. I have to say that it did help but only a bit....it helped me from actually vomiting but I still felt very queasy. I say go for it. Oh, and I didn't have any side effects. Oh yeah and my baby was born very healthy and weighed in at almost 9 lbs..LOL."

Any pregnant ladies taking Phenergan or Zofran? I was on Zofran when I was pregnant with my daughter, but my midwife gave me Phenergan for my current pregnancy.(I hate taking medication while pregnant, but I couldn't keep food or water down for 2 weeks. it's a last resort). Anyway, I looked up the side effects online because shortly after I take a pill my heart beats a lot faster (not scary fast). It's not listed as a side effect. Has anyone else had this happen? I'll call my midwife in the morning, just curious. Thanks.

Jill replied: "It's a relatively common side effect. Try hydrating yourself really well and it might alleviate that heart-racing feeling."

Sophia's Mommy :] Due 03/09 replied: "YES! That happened to me all the time on both of those medications. To be honest, I never knew why.. I asked my doctor and he said it was normal but I guess I didn't put two and two together. Even when I wasn't active, if I was just sitting on the couch sometimes my heart would beat really fast for a minute or two. If I would have known it was the medication I would have been a little more at ease.. it scared me to death!"

Mom to a 4yo boy & #2 on the way replied: "I was on Phenergan at the beginning of my pregnancy. I did experience that feeling but only for a very short time before the medicine made me fall asleep."

Is REALLY Promethazine safe to take in pregnancy for sickness? Hi there, I am almost 9 weeks pregnant and since week 6 I am horribly nauseaus, extremely tired, with on and off vomitting. I am glued to the sofa and getting to work in the morning is a nightmare, driving is a problem, everything I used to do before is just a chore now and I am feeling very bad and already depressed about it. My stomach hurts and this constant feeling of sickness is killing me. When I went to see my GP 2 days ago as I couldn't bear it anymore and asked for Zofran (many pregnant women were very complimentary about this drug) he said it isn't licensed for pregnancy sickness and prescribed me Avomine (promethazine). I found it to be only a bit helpful and everytime I take it I need to lie down for an hour in order for it to kick in and feeling better. When I take one at night, I am sick and nauseaus again in the morning, so it is better to take one in the morning and actually feel it working at least. But I am soooo drowsy after taking it. When having a nap for an hour I feel a bit better and nausea is gone for 2-3 hours. After that it's back again!!! I don't want to take too much of it, as I am afraid it has got an effect on the baby? Has anyone had similar experiences with taking Promethazine in pregnancy for the sickness and were babies born ok? I am really at the end of my tether, can't see me being able to function like this for much longer. Any help here PLEASE??? Many thanks

momof2girls replied: "yes it is they would not give it to you unless it was safe. it will make you sleepy that is the only bad thing about it, They use Zofran for extreme cases and he is right some doctors just use it like mine.. I used both and I like both equally. Make sure you are eating every two hours as well that seems to help small meals and lots and lots of water"
