How to stop taking Abilify? I've been taking 10mg Abilify for about 4 months for Bipolar I Disorder. I'd like to stop taking it because I can't stand being so tired and unmotivated all of the time. How do I gradually take myself off and how long does it take to stop taking it? I was thinking of starting to just take a half dose for a week and then cut that in half for a week and then stopping it.
rosieC replied: "Once you're diagnosed with BiPOLAR ; you shouldn't wean yourself from Abilify which is a new drug on the market. If these meds are making you extremely sleepy; point this out to the doctor so he can adjust the dosage.
But definitely do not quit cold- turkey. it caused me 4 hospitalizations until i was properly diagnosed. And I was placed on the right meds to address my problems.
My problems started when I was a teen and now I'm in my 60. This is just to let you know that Bi-polar is a long-term disorder. Without my meds, i swing easily from mania and depression e.g. racy thoughts and rapid speaking,etc.and crying spells often."
Is blurred vision while taking Abilify reason to stop taking it? I'm taking a VERY low dose (2 mg) in conjunction with Lexapro for depression. After about a week after starting usage, I've noticed my vision has become blurred enough to be a problem while on the computer or other short distance viewing. Is this serious enough to consider quitting the Abilify? Will it get better as my body gets used to this new drug?

Susas replied: "Why are you taking it for depression anyway? I think the very low dose is more like 1mg. I can't really understand why it is prescribed for unipolar. Ask your doctor why you have to take it. I don't think taking it is good. Also if your blood sugar wasn't tested, it should have been. Lexapro should be enough by itself."

margie k replied: "You need to speak with the doctor that prescribed it for you, so you can follow a program to wean yourself away from it safely. Whatever you do, don't stop taking it on your own, it could have bad side effects or withdrawal effects for you. Best of luck."

Should I stop taking my Abilify if I'm experiencing internal restlessness and shaking? Obviously I'm going to talk to my doctor about this but just seeing if in the meantime I could acquire some helpful feedback. I've only been on it for four days and last night started to feel a bit more energetic and today I feel like I'm amped up on redbulls. Will these go away after a while or should I talk to my doc about changing meds (sigh) again.
birgit replied: "Don't do anything until you talk to your doctor. I don't know this drug but some meds are dangerous if you stop cold turkey. Just report all this to your doctor immediately (or at least talk to your pharmacist if you can't reach your doctor quickly)."

What would happen to somebody who stopped taking Abilify, Klonopin and Lexapro? What would the side effects be? If somebody suddenly stopped taking one or all of these pills after a while, what kind of side effects would occur?

stacey replied: "Klonipin is a benzodiazepine and abrupt withdrawal may cause restlessness, tremors, sweating, GI symptoms (nausea/vomiting) cramps, even seizures.
Lexapro is a serotonin re uptake inhibitor, stopping this med suddenly can cause severe headaches, lethargy, anxiety, confusion, possibly also nausea and vomiting...
Stopping abilify abruptly may cause insomnia, possibly some similar symptoms.
Also, whatever you are taking these meds for will most likely get worse: i.e. If you are taking abilify for bipolar disorder, abrupt withdraw may cause hypomania or mania, withdrawal of lexapro will probably cause depression to return, and withdrawal of klonipin most likely will cause a return of anxiety and/or panic attacks.
I recommend talking to a doctor if you want to get off your meds, some of these withdrawal symptoms are very serious. The doctor will help you taper off safely."
Stop taking Abilify? I've been shaking a lot and while playing a video game my heart was beating way too fast, so fast I had to stop playing. I skipped a pill last night night because I don't plan on taking that again.lol.Am I doing the right thing?
I've told my doc, but she's useless. She just told me it was up to me, and that if I can't handle the medicine then I should stop taking it.
Monday is my check up to see how the medicine is doing,as I type I can barely pay attention to one thing at a time.

Candy replied: "When I was on that medicine I had uncontrolable muscle spams and I had to stop. It is not wise to just stop cold turkey. Talk to your doc on Monday and if she is useless, try to go see another doc."
Catherine B replied: "The biggest problem with Abilify is an intense feeling of restlessness that occurs in a small percent of patients. It's very possible that your heart was beating fast because the video game was exciting or you had been drinking caffeine (among other things). Most minor side effects will resolve in about 2 weeks, so I'd encourage you to continue to take the Abilify for at least that long."

Is it okay to stop taking the drug "Abilify" abruptly? I have been taking 5 mg. a day for depression for about two months now, (I also take 50 mg. of Zoloft). I can't really tell a big difference in my depression, but I am extremely nervous and agitated, and I have gained weight, which I know is one of the side effects. I made an appointment with my doctor, but it's not for a few days, and I was just curious.

How long after you stop taking abilify, will it remain in your system? i want to stop taking this med it is just too much! too many side effects! gives me vertigo, blurred vision, sometimes i cant even stand it gets so bad, and i fall over, i slur and cant pronunce my words correctly and ppl cant understand me...wtf. so how long if i stop taking it would it take to be out of my system. i know if i miss a dose i dont get side effects..
also have RLS from it and get so restless at night i cant sleep, so when my newborn is sleeping im not sleeping so i NEVER sleep so i get sleep deprived! ugh...
roseaust replied: "I don't know how long it will stay in your system, but I recommend you contact your prescribing physician if you want to stop taking this drug. You probably need to wean yourself off of it slowly, not just stop taking it.

I take abilify for anxiety- and want to stop taking it- this is the first night off it and I cannot sleep- ? is this one of the side affects and if so how long will it take to wear off?

And yes, restlessness is a side affect from weaning yourself off of it.

jamiegrammie replied: "take half of the dose your supposed to for the first week then half every other day for the following week. then space it into 2 day's for a week then 3 day's for a week then four and u should be good slowly wean yourself off"
Jessica H replied: "thats really good your getting off your pills, but it may cause your anixiety to come back even though you are feeling better, just keep your self heathly..and you cant sleep mabey because your thinking about it...just go and watch a relaxing movie, go get some snacks and stay up till your tired..one night up wont kill you =D"
HOw do you know when to stop taking certain meds? Like Abilify? and Geodon?
Andy replied: "I really don't know for sure, but I know if you stop taking the medication, the symptoms could return so it's advised not to discontinue a medication without doctor's approval. Also medications like Abilify and Geodon have to be stopped gradually and not "cold turkey". You can suffer withdrawals. I know. I've been there with stopping Abilify too quickly. (discontinued Abilify due to side effects). I would think that Abilify and Geodon are more of long term medications rather than as needed medications. That's all I can really say on the subject, but best to speak with the doctor. They have more knowledge than a yahoo answer person. Best of luck."
