Does anyone know how long it takes for gabapentin to start to work for sleep disorders? I've been taking ambien for years and now it's not working so my doctor has switched me to gabapentin. I've taken it for 3 nights and I still am not sleeping, but I'm really foggy in the morning. If anyone can tell me how long it took for them, that would be sweet.
Slapjack replied: "Hmm, never heard gabapentin being used for sleeping. If it does not work after a few nights call your doctors office and see about getting it changed or making a new office visit."
How does Lyrica work and Gabapentin doesn't. I am 61 yrs. young and have had diabetes since 33 yrs. old. My I was to a neurologist who put me on 12 200 mg. capsules of gabapentin a day. I feel this drug is good for nothing. If I change over my Dr. says there are a lot of side effects. I have been waking up in pain every AM and wish my life was over. I am on antidepressants but the pain goes with me wherever I go and thats not many places now as I cannot keep my balance, stand for more than 2 minutes without leaning on something. My husband and I are in a seniors apt. building and struggle everyday finacially and physically. He needs a hip replacement, has a hernia and a bad knee. We someone survive, but that is what we are doing surviving, not living or enjoying these golden years people told me about. If I do go on the drug Lyrica I guess I will have to fight to have it covered as I did that with the Gabapentin. I am running out of fight and smiles now. Can anyone tell me the address of fpizer corporation. I guess they would be the best to speak to as this is my only option.
mlgable replied: "You need to contact the senior center nearest you to see what help they offer and also contact your counties eldercare person for Health and Human services. There is help avaiable but only if you ask for it."
Linda replied: "I think you should switch to Lyrica!! It will replace Gabapantin, and I'm surprised at your doctor telling you it will have alot of side effects....or does the doctor just mean that the switching will give you side effects. You have to remember that doctors are just people with a bit more training than us regular folks, BUT not all doctors know the same thing. Lyrica has far less side effects than Gabapantin. Is your Gabapantin for neuropathy ... pain?? If so, Lyrica will definitely help because it targets nerve pain, like the pain associated with diabetes. Go ahead and fight for it if you have to ... you shouldn't, but this is YOUR life, and you don't sound happy at all right now with the way things are going. HANG IN THERE, and you'll get better ... at least the pain will stop with Lyrica. My dad has diabetes and he switched from Gab to Lyrica this year and is so relieved now! He said he gets a little dizzy, but that's all, and he's about 66. My daughter has taken Lyrica for horrible ankle and foot pain and she says it has worked for her. Good Luck! You be in charge of what you put into your body, not the doctor. All he needs is a day in your shoes to see that Gab isn't doing the job!! Oh, tell him you'd like some samples of Lyrica, too, to try. (At least they'll be free, although you won't know what dosage you should take ... he can help with that, though.) By the way, if you could get ahold of the drug company itself, they'd be more than happy to give you samples, but I don't have an address. Best Wishes!!!"

Does Gabapentin work? I have been using Gabapentin for some time now. I was prescribed this drug for pain relief relating to Firbromyalgia (diagnosed in 2007). I am now on 1500mg daily but I am still getting unbelievably bad pain. A friend suggested that this maybe a placebo drug, I would appreciate any advice?
Nils baby sister replied: "Your friend is correct....this drug is for people who believe they are experiencing severe pain (its all in the mind).......obviously not working in your case! Seek a pain management professional referred by your doctor."
greenwichtime replied: "I also have Fibromyalgia. Gabapentin is generic for Neurontin. It's not a placebo. It works directly on the nerves so the pain is supposed to be alleviated. I think it was originally developed for shingles, which is a very painful ailment, and it works for shingles.
It doesn't work in my case either. I was on Lyrica for a long time, and that helped me, even though it also works on the nerves to prevent the pain, but it works a little differently. Since it was developed for specifically for Fibromyalgia, I tried it when it first came out. It worked well at first, eventually needed increased dosage to achieve the same results, and then no longer helped - but that process took years. I had to go back to the pain reliever and muscle relaxer route, which I'm not happy about, but it works. If you haven't tried Lyrica yet, that might be your best bet. You can get up to years of relief on Lyrica, and who knows, maybe by then they will have come up with a cure for us. I'm not holding my breath, but I am hoping. I hope you get the relief you need."
Does Gabapentin help with nerve pain created by have had open heart surgery when they crack your chest open? I had open heart surgery and have a problem with numbness and sharp burning pain across my chest. It has been diagnosed as nerve pain from the nerves across my chest that were cut opening my chest to perform the bypass. I was put on Gabapentin for it and have been told that if it still exists after 1 year then it will be permanent.
preacher7003 replied: "im surprised they put u on gabapentin. it works on some nerves, however, gabapentin is used for epilepsy to manage seizures. another generic name for gabapentn is neurontin. ive had 7 by-passes, but they gave me hydrocodone. i also have a numness in my chest, and it is permanent. but its not life threating, just somethink we will have to live with. i had mine 7 yrs. ago. hope this helps. god bless"
Howard H replied: "Yes, it will work on nerve-damage pain. I had bypass 8 months ago and after 6 months got my sensation back in right chest. Never really had much pain except with coughing the first few weeks, but occasionally musculoskeletal-type pain with movement, lifting, etc. How long ago was yours?"
Marline E replied: "I have not needed to have my chest cracked open yet though it is a distinct possibility. What I suffer from is fibromyalgia, which causes body-wide pain. In July /07 the FDA approved Lyrica (a close cousin of gabapentin) for the treatment of fibromyalgia. I couldn't believe the difference it made overnight! I used to wake up feeling I had been hit by a locomotive. Suddenly, I felt like dancing! I am getting the aching and stiffness again, however, so I am going to ask whether I can go higher on this drug. Perhaps you should ask for the maximum, too. Just be sure the doctor takes you up higher gradually."
How doeses Gabapentin work and is it a safe drug? It's anti-spasmodic and calms the nervous system. But is it addictive?
Skyetai replied: "Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. Gabapentin treats seizures by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Gabapentin relieves pain by changing the way the body senses pain. I would think it poses a moderate risk of addiction since it does alter the way the body senses pain."

Does Gabapentin show up on a urine drug test? If so, how long will it take for it to leave the system so it won't show up on an urine drug test?
Thank you for not answer my question.
Thank you for answer answering my question :)
Joe replied: "There's no reason to take gabapentin without a legitimate medical purpose. If you have a prescription, you have no worries even if it does.
No problem. I guess for some stupid reason you took gabapentin without a prescription. It doesn't get you high, so why the hell would you take it?
To answer your question, drug tests don't look for gabapentin or its metabolites."
ZIGGIE replied: "It will show positive for a drug.
They have to figure it out themselves, so be honest about what's in your system, because they are thinking worse.
Sorry, but yah it'll show you took something."
why does gabapentin make people gain weight is it from the meds or because it makes you hungry? that's it!
David replied: "my wife takes it. no weight issues."
Kathleen replied: "The drug does actually cause weight increase but it may also make you think you're hungry."
Speedy replied: "The URL Below tells you a lot about gabapentin in a easy to understand format. Oddly enough one of the side effects is that it can cause loss of appetite
Hope that this helps?"
Does anyone here use Gabapentin as a Mood stabilizer? Ive been using it for about 6 years off and on and it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. Ive noticed it works mainly to keep me not so sad. I recently read that it really doesn't help at all. I don't understand. Its actually helped me but not as much as I wish it did. Am i alone on this..
Serabi replied: "The reason you aren't getting the same effect is because you have taken it for so long and you now have a tolerance. you should get an increase on the dose"
