Will Cephalexin help to heal a yeast infection? Pretty self explanatory. It's a lot like Keflex. Will it heal a yeast infection?

Abbey loves Jesus replied: "Cephalexin is an antibiotic right? And you have a current yeast infection? Then it will probably worsen your condition. Antibiotics kill the good bacteria along with the bad. Without the good bacteria down there you can develop a yeast infection. Many women, myself included, have developed a yeast infection due to antibiotic use. While you are on this medicine eat yogurt everyday and make sure the yogurt has live and active cultures, I once had a doctor recommend Activia (which tastes good). I don't know if I would recommend it thought because it doesn't have Acidopholus, but it has other beneficial bacteris so it might help. Or if you don't want to eat yogurt take some Acidopholus pills, which you can purchase at any drug or health food store. If you know for certain you have a yeast infection ask your doctor for a pill, I think it is called Diflucan. Or you can go to any pharmacy and buy cream to use after you finish your antibiotic."

unschoolymomma replied: "No. It will actually cause it to be worse in a lot of cases or cause yeast infections. The best thing to use is Monostat internal 7 day cream and also use the cream on the outside of your vagina to help with the itching. That is all you need. Oh and you can if you want to go natural dip a tampon in organic plain yogurt and stick it up there. It will help cure it. Also just eating yogurt helps too. I say go for the monostat. Dont do the one day treatment. This is often not enough. Do the full 7 day treatment. If for some reason it is not gone by then- you need to see the doctor as it could be something else. Now Keflex wil help with a Urinary Tract infection which sometimes can be confused as Yeast infection because you can get itchy and burning too."

peachymom replied: "I'm not sure about Cephalexin, but AZO Yeast works great! It's a homeopathic tablet. It was so simple in fact I was leary about buying it and cleared up within a day or so. Try it!"

teamhalsey replied: "If you have a yeast infection, you need to go to a drug store and get the vaginal suppositories to heal it but then you need to lay off the sugar. Sugar feeds the yeast in your body, it is called Candida Infection. Cut back on white flour, breads, pastas rice and sweets. Eat more veggies & fruit only in the morning by itself then eat 3 hours after something else like whole grain breads, cereals and did I mention.....lots of veggies. Stay away from SUGAR!! Hope this helps."

Zambiti replied: "Others are right. The antibiotic may appear to work at first, but you will get a recurrent infection, and they will just keep coming. I wouldn't bother filling the prescription if you haven't yet. For yeast infection, best thing to do is Grapefruit Seed Extract. You can take it in liquid and pill form. Depending on where your yeast infection is, one may be better than the other. This is what you are looking for: (liquid) or (pills) If vaginal yeast infection, dilute liquid GSE into a douche - 30 drops or so. You shouldn't have to do it more than a couple times to get relief. You can take the pills, one ever 4 hours, for a day or two. Increase water intake, and when you have gotten relief, you need to start taking a good probiotic (refrigerated ones are best - here is an example: - this is the brand I prefer, but there are many others to choose from) The probiotic will replenish good bacteria to keep the yeast in check. Yeast infections happen from a couple things - metals moving in your system and lack of healthy bacteria. BTW- healthy bacteria are killed by antibiotics and the GSE. So, you really need to replenish any time you use either. Yogurt is kind of week for getting the bacteria back, so a probiotic pill is best. If you decide to use the iHerb links I provided to get any of this, you can also use coupon code KES097 to save $5 on your first time order. (not affiliated, just where I buy and had a coupon). Their shipping is fast. We usually receive our orders from them in 3 days. Not everyone has access to a good health food store, and they are expensive there. Hope you are feeling better soon! For future reference, GSE is great for any reason you would use an antibiotic legitimately too. We also use it for fungal infections (toes, nails), for ear infections, just few diluted drops in ear, and for throat infections, diluted as a gargle. There are instructions on the label that will give you a good idea of all the uses."

EJordyn replied: "Taking an antibiotic when you have a yeast infection is like adding fuel to a fire. The reason you have a yeast infection is probably because of taking too many antibiotics. That's the primary reason yeast infections are so rampant these days. The only time I would take an antibiotic is if I had a life threatening illness. Otherwise, for colds and such I just ride it out and take tons of Vitamin C, immune boosters, fresh juices, etc. Avoid sugar, carbs, beer, mushrooms, bread--anything that contains yeast or sugar. I would stay away from any prescription yeast meds. They may take away the symptoms temporarily, but the infection will eventually come back. You have to get to the root of the problem by replenishing your body/gut with the good bacteria that's missing--which is what caused the yeast infection. Take a good probiotic (very important), parasite supplement, eat yogurt with live cultures (no sugar or flavor). A few drops of wild oregano oil put in v-caps and taken orally is effective against parasites, too. You can also dip a tampon in sugar-free, flavor free yogurt with live cultures and insert in your vagina. It'll help with itching and irritation and help re-introduce good bacteria back into your system. In short, you've got to re-balance your gut flora and every time you take an antibiotic, it gets further out of balance and you have more work ahead of you."

Is it possible to get a yeast infection 2 days into antibiotics? I have been taking keflex for a few spider bites and I'm supposed to take 1, 4x a day for 7 days. I think I'm getting a yeast infection but it's only been 2 full days into the pills. Thanks.

Denise S replied: "Well first of al antibiotics cause the yeast infections and from what I have been told, yes it is very possible."

T.P - SN replied: "Yes it might be a side effect of the drug. It can happen within the first dose depending on your body. Tell you doctor of your symptoms."

jason replied: "yep, be sure to eat lots of yogurt because the antibiotics will cause you to have the yeast infection"

Heather Marie replied: "When I was prescribed antibiotics i was also given a one time only pill that prevents a yeast infection. You should ask your doctor about that."

ebonyruffles replied: "Happens quite often with women. Eat plain yogurt. The real stuff that contains live cultures. If you don't like yogurt, take acidophulus capsules."

Agony Aunty Callie replied: "It is so possible that when my Doctor prescribes Antibiotics, she also gives me a script for treatment for the inevitable thrush that will accompany it. Eating a pro-Biotic yogurt/ drink such as Yakult, during the treatment will aid in quick recovery of your yeast imbalance."

whitejo45 replied: "The problem with antibiotics is that they work against all bacteria in your body and do not discriminate against the good or bad kind, so I think it is quite possible you have a yeast infection but please remember that yeast infection symptoms can be similar to other unrelated conditions, your doctor will diagnose for sure. Good bacteria actually help to keep yeast levels in control, a sort of inner body balancing act if you like. When the good bacteria are killed off by antibiotics then yeast wins the battle and starts the infection by multiplying out of control. You need to try to replace the good bacteria, to restore the balance and as mentioned a good way to do this is to eat yoghurt. But you need to eat the variety with the live cultures, commonly marketed as pro biotic. It is preferable to eat the natural variety at first, if you like this, for best results, at least until you are off the antibiotics. You will also find that pro biotic products are not just limited to yoghurts I am seeing milk shakes and other items appearing at the stores."

Yeast infection? Will Keflex cause a yeast infection? I get one every time I'm on amoxicillan and for my strep throat I was perscribed something different.

starynight39 replied: "yes it can. any type of antibiotics can cause a yeast infection. just let your doctor know and he can prescribe you an yeast infection med. or you can get the over the counter cream at the drug store."

Nate Higgers replied: "Don't masturbate with bread, silly."

HP replied: "I assume you mean a vaginal yeast infection. If that is the case then, yes, an antibiotic may cause a yeast infection. Why? The vagina is an area that normally has various bacteria and yeasts that are competing against each other as they try to grow. In a healthy woman, none of the yeasts or bacteria are able to grow more than the others, so they keep each other in check. When a woman is prescribed an antibiotic therapy, the antibiotic kills bacteria wherever they are in the body. This means that some of the vagina's bacteria may be killed off. With the bacteria gone, the yeasts have room to grow and turn into an infection. Antibiotics are not effective against yeasts, so your doctor will prescribe something else for you. Hope this helps!"

Thomasina replied: "I think any antibiotic can cause a yeast infection, hopefully this one won't for you. Good luck"

d99arizona replied: "Yes, it can. And I know for me, when I took Keflex it brought along the WORST yeast infection I've ever had. It was horrible. I've taken about every antibiotic known to man and none caused an infection quite like Keflex. One thing you can do, however, to prevent yeast infections while on antibiotics...is eat a lot of yogurt or ask your pharmacist for acidopholis pills. They are over the counter but the pharmacy keeps them refridgerated because they have to be. Either way, these will prevent a yeast infection from becoming REALLY bad and at least you'll have some relief. Or, if you have the money, ask your doctor to prescribe you a yeast infection medicine along with the antibiotics. Hope this helps!"

workwanted replied: "I have gotten yeast infection twice when taking Keflex, for fingernail infections. But when I get bronchitis, I can take Amoxicillin and not get yeast infections. So Keflex must be killing off a lot of bacteria to get them."

Is it common to get a yeast infection while on ammoxicillin? I always get them when I take Keflex. I just want to make sure it's okay/expected while on 500-mg of ammox. for strep throat as well.

shot528 replied: "yes .. for me ..........................."

WiserAngel replied: "Yep. It helps to take a probiotic (acidopholus and other cultures) while you are taking an antibiotic to put back the normal bacteria that its killing."

shani replied: "Yup. Any antibiotic."

Answer Fairy replied: "Good freaking lord, YES! Most pharmacists will warn you about it. In fact, whenever I have to take antibiotics of any kind, my doctor also gives me some yeast infection pills for right after my antibiotic round is done. It will go away when you are finished taking them. Sucks to be a girl, huh?"

maia replied: "Whenever I am prescribed antibiotics I always ask for a diflucan Rx too, because for me a yeast infection is inevitable. I usually take the diflucan when I finish all the antibiotics. There are some herbal remedies you can try, but they don't work for me."

sokokl replied: "Yep, yeast infections are common with Amoxicillin and other antibiotics. One way to help keep that from being a problem is by taking acidophillous. You can buy it in either capsules of their own or by eating plain yogurt."

kerosene1013 replied: "Yes absolutely! you can ask for them to give you oral nystatin to take while on antibiotics. Eat lots of yougurt and if you think you have a yeast infection call the doc they will prescribe Diflucan (Fluconazole) for the infection."

Yeast infection not letting up?help.? Tomarrow i will call the doc. I wanted to give the medicine 4-five days first. okay, I got a yeast infection from antibiotics called keflex.doc checked me out and yes indeed.she perscribed diflucan (2 pills 1 pill for two days). This was thurs. it's now monday and NO relief! She said to use monistate, but that makes it worse, I also tries vagisil, ouch, burning itch was intense after 5 minutes had to take a shower. I need help fo the itching and burnining. Why didnt the medicine work? PLEASE READ ENTIRE QUESTION.IT SAYS I GOT IT FROM AN ANTIBIOTIC ITS NOT AN STD, IT IS A YEAST INFECTION

charliebrown replied: "how did you get it?"

Echo1975 replied: "It might not be a yeast infection. It could be an STD. I'm glad you have a doctors appointment."

Kitty replied: "try mycelex. vagisil is from the devil!!! With antibiotics it sometimes takes awhile for anything to work, try not to scratch, it will make it worse, and you may have gotten BV now too, which will make you itch like all hell. try to keep as dry as possible, no scented anything, pantyliners, pads, scented downy or anything on your panties. Good Luck, it will clear up!!"

Ness replied: "Yes antibiotics can give you yeast infections so it is good you are taking meds for that. If it is not working, best to go back to Dr. They might give you something else. In the meantime for the burning, you can go to Walmart. They have over the counter meds that can help. Also eat yogurt with live cultures. They help."

momma2more replied: "Get some plain yogurt ( a small container), mix 1/3 of it with warm water and douche with it. Do this for 3 days and you should feel much better. The active cultures in the yogurt bring the vagina pH back to normal. I have used this for over 15 years and it ALWAYS works. I was plagued with yeast infections from the time I was 12 years old and never got any relief until a doctor told me to try this. I rarely have yeast infections now."

punksbaby replied: "OK, try to chill out on the vagisil. There is too much going on in your vaginal region. If you are absolutely not getting any relief from the diflucan( it can take up to a week to work) call the doc and get another medication. The ones that go intravaginally usually work more quickly."

wingsfan1979 replied: "Im not sure why your meds arent working, but I can help you for next time. Whenever I have to take anitbiotics, I end up with a yeast infection. My doctor had me take Acidophilus whenever I need to take antibiotics. Its a dietary supplement thats prevents the yeast infections. We get ours at GNC, but Im sure they sell them just about anywhere. Good luck !"

raffi replied: "see a doc"

mazell41 replied: "I had this same problem several yrs. ago & was going to the Dr. all the time. No results. Finally after 3 mo. I told the Dr. I was going to find a new Dr. , he said give him one more chance. Maybe I had a bacterial infection instead. He treated me & my husband and I was finally cured. It acted & felt exactly like a yeast infection. It was not an std.but between my husband & I, we kept passing it back & forth. Anyway, ask your Dr. if bacterial infection could be the culprit."

Kerry R replied: "Great call the doc. She should be able to help. In the mean time do not douche! I don't know who wrote that but it could really make the problem worse. Most docs will tell you that. You can try an oatmeal bath. Aveeno works well for itching. Try to keep dry no fragrances and wear cotton underwear (yes I know only Grandma wears these) but they breathe better than nylon. Also get some yogurt with live cultures. One 8 oz serving a day will help. You can also do this when you start an antibiotic as a preventative."

mickey replied: "I've had that happen before. Now I don't know if its the same thing you have, but when I went to the doctor it ended up being a bacterial infection instead. I get both all the time. Its a reoccurring thing for me unfortunately. I've had this problem since I started my period at age 12 and I'm now 31. I do everything right like wiping from front to back, drying with a different towel every night, eating yogurt and etc. but I still get them. So I know how it feels and I hope it gets better for you. I wouldn't use anymore monistate. Use a cold wash wag to clean yourself. It gives a little relief. Good luck"

passenger204 replied: "1) Antibiotics kill bacteria.. 2) Duflucan kills fungus.. 3) Friendly bacteria hold fungus in check.. You have killed off the bacteria causing the initial problem, but you also killed off the healthy bacteria meant to be existing in our bodies to control fungus's. You took step one and two, but need to take the third step and rebuild your friendly bacteria. You can get a tiny amount back by eating some yogurt, but you need to go to a supplements store and get some Keefer (a drink) or probiotics. Only buy them when they have been kept refrigerated or completely sealed like the Pearls brand. In the future never take antibiotics without probiotics during and after-wards. Always take a antifungal along with a course of antibiotics as well. A natural one for your body is Oil of Oregano made by Gaia Herbs aprox 15.00 a bottle. If a doctor gives you shit about anti-fungal or probiotics use - "fire" him/her. You don't need an ignorant doctor that is going to make you ill. Off topic but still good to know is that the third leading cause of death in the US is prescription and over the counter medications. And doctors are not allowed to speak about it because it could slow down the profit's of pharmaceutical companies. They can speak about it but they can loose their license for it. p.s. ..........and if you do have a sexual pertner make sure he is fungal free as well. Fungas is something that people can pick up in more ways than antibiotic use. For instance if a partner has athlet's foot he has fungas in his sytem - or there was any cross transmission - this can be passed on through semen etc (fungas is systemic - usually throughout a system). And you are very sensitive to that at this point."

kara replied: "well hopefully by going to the doctor tommorow he can prescribe somethig for you and it will help. Good luck."

What can I do when anntibiotics keep giving me yeast infections but yet I have to take it? I keep getting yeast infections and I dont know what to do cause the doctor said I need to take the "keflex" for my toe in order to clear the infection but yet I think I got yeast and dont know what to do.If I take the keflex it will get worse. It already feels like that and Im scared to take it.Doctors arent here on the weekend so Im not sure what I can do.

Liz replied: "Take Monistat--I've had a yeast infection before and it works."

D4Pres2012 replied: "if you've had a diagnosed yeast infection before, I think it's safe to get that OTC stuff like monistat. take the antibiotics because clearing your infection is more important than the discomfort the yeast infection brings. penicillin is pretty strong stuff, if you have a bad infection then I guess that's why your Dr prescribed it but there may be a more mild antibiotic you can take that won't cause you to have a yeast infection."

MICHAEL replied: "First off, antibiotics do not cause yeast infections! Secondly, if you call your doctor's office and listen to the message, you'll find that even if your doctor is not available, there is always some doctor on-call to speak with patients. Thirdly, if all else fails, call the ER. They'll answer all your q's, too."

polar replied: "Yes some do exactly that.Penicillin especially most people will not take them. You can buy an ant yeast cream use it at the same time you are taking the Keflex. Most likely can be bought over the counter without a prescription. If not wait till monday or go to the emergency outpatient."

KylasMom_23 replied: "Eat yogurt before you start taking the antibiotics and during."

Kayla S replied: "Antibiotics can indirectly cause a yeast infection. Antibiotitcs are used to kill bacteria from certain infections, however they also kill the good bacteria in our bodies that fights off things such as a yeast infection. I would go to the grocery store or a health food store and buy some probiotic drinks. These contain some of the good bacteria naturally found in our body that can help you. It won't stop the yeast infections symptoms at this point though, but for the future, if you are on antibiotics you should always take probiotics to prevent another yeast infection. Monostat will work, get the three day kind though, the one day kind makes it hurt more for a while and then cures it. You will be fine. Also limit your sugar intake, yeast likes sugar and carbs. Eat garlic or buy some garlic pills, yeast doesn't like garlic. Hope this helps!"

Is it another yeast infection? Or implantation bleeding? Okay, so two weeks ago I had a horrendous toothache and was prescribed Amoxicillin to get rid of the infection. Well, because they kill all bacteria, including the good ones, I had a yeast infection. She prescribed me Diflucan, got rid of the infection, had sex about a week ago. Then a couple days later I had some blood, but not like beginning of the period blood, it was very light and almost pink, but there was still some red. I'm not due for my period for like, at least 10 days, and I usually start feeling symptoms of it coming but I'm not. Now I have a yellowish discharge that doesn't smell, and it doesn't itch or burn (i'm back on antibiotics (keflex) for the tooth that doesn't want fixed) so it's not another yeast infection. Everyone that I have talked to says that the bleeding and the discharge can be from the irritation, but that it could also be the beginnings of pregnancy symptoms. Can someone please help me? I have a test to take at home if that's what I should do. There is no odor whatsoever, and I looked up bacterial vaginosis and they all said that most people have a fish-like smell, and I haven't smelled anything. They also say that you don't HAVE to have odor, but they also never say anything about it being yellow....

Andrea V replied: "could be bacterial vaginosis. i thought i had a yeast infection but it was that. to add after you add more detail... Mine didnt have a smell trust me i sniffed lol."

Indiana Raven replied: "I agree with the previous poster about bacterial vaginosis. This is actually more common than a yeast infection and women get misdiagnosed sometimes by their doctor or themselves. Regular yeast infection treatments will not clear up bacterial vaginosis you need a certain antibiotic. I know I've had it."

angel_gurl_69_2006 replied: "Im 16 and thats what i did when i found out i was 6 weeks pregnant we thought there was something wrong but it was nothing but a baby i had that for like 3 weeks of the 6week pregnancy if u want to take the test go a head it might be something that u need to find out so they will quit giving u pills to take some of the stuff that they gave u could hurt the baby im not trying to scare u im just trying to tell u"

guitarxchick replied: "the EXACT same thing happened to me... you can still have remnants of youre yeast infectin... they gave me Diflucan but it didnt completely irradicate it... It didnt itch or burn but it still had a yellowish discharge and it was kinda irritated...so I went to the OB and they perscribed me something stronger... like a giant tampon with cream in it... it worked... so you mite wanna go to the OB and get a culture test to make sure its a yeast infection still"

Help, what is it UTI or yeast infection or ? Ok, what is the difference in UTI and yeast infection or others? My symptoms are: pain when I urinate, it feels like a burning sensation (going more frequent,ly no that I'm drinking lots of water) No discharge but I do have an odor to my urine sometimes doesn't really itch but uncomfortable I have a prescription of Keflex that I got about a week ago for another type of infection that healed so I didn't get it filled. I hear that Keflex works on UTI's? I am going to the Dr tomorrow at 5pm, meanwhile I am in pain should I just fill the Keflex and tell the Dr after? any input would be great, thanks Please, I know I should self diagnosis and I am going to the Dr so nothing about that. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!! should say that "I should NOT self diagnosis"

Sarah B replied: "It sounds like a UTI you can get a product called AZO from walmart that will ease all the pain and symptoms. It is actually almost the same thing the dr charges you for."

How to rid this persistent yeast infection? I went to the gyno and they gave me a 7-day cream. About halfwya through, I called up because it wasn't working. Then they prescribed me 2 diflucans and told me to take one every 48 hours. It's slightly working, but not a whole lot. I had some issues recently; I had a UTI last year (cured up), then I had bv (cured), and NOW I have this yeast infection. I think I got it because I didn't respond well to flagyl for the BV, so then they gave me cleocin, and then I had to take keflex for my UTI; guess what? Hardly any effect so then they gave me Amoxicillin. Then I thought I was fine, but then this crap happens. I sure hope it's nothing major. I've read posts where a yeast infection can be caused by scary factors like diabetes and leukemia. Scary. But I'm not weak and don't have symptoms of diabetes. Help?! PS...I was born with thrush in my mouth and it was also hard to get rid of, but I don't know how the pros did it. Thanks jf, and when they did the culture it definitely came back as yeast and nothing bacterial, like bv. Also, I'm still a virgin, so I'm not sexually active.

Jesusfreak replied: "There is one medication that I really like that cures the yeast infection pretty quickly. Also have you been given Cipro for the bacterial infections? Has the dr. done a culture to see what type of bacteria is growing? Usually when a culture is done the lab work comes back with suggestions of antibiotics that work the best. As for the yeast infection you may want to try something that was given to my by my dermatologist cause he said usually the over the counter stuff doesn't work well. It was ketoconazole and it worked within two days to get rid of my symptoms. I'm glad you are at least getting to a dr. Usually Cipro is a very strong antibiotic that gets rid of a lot of bacteria. Whenever I'm on antibiotics I eat yogurt and use over the counter stuff but I prefer the Ketoconazole that was prescribed by my dermatologist. If you have a dermatologist you may want to see him/her for possibly the medication. They specialize in skin disorders and although gyn dr's usually diagnose and treat vaginal infections, the time I went on Tetracycline for my face I had to call the dermatologist on call and he just called in some of this after Monistat didn't work. If you are having sex please don't do this while you are treating an infection cause I've heard or seen on here that it can pass from one partner to the other. Good luck and feel better. Try getting some Ketoconazole as I swear by this and is the best medication I've ever used for yeast infections. Here's a link about it. Beware though that there is a message about the drug possibly causing liver problems but if you want to get a handle on the yeast it may do you better than trying other things that don't work. "Azoles are effective in curing thrush, especially when other topical treatment has not been helpful.2 Ketoconazole and fluconazole can cure thrush that has spread into the esophagus." If you keep getting recurrent yeast infections you may be required to stay on a maintenance dose to keep the yeast down. I take prophylactic (as needed) antibiotics to prevent UTI's if I have sex as it prevents them from coming back. Heres another link about thrush and at the bottom it talks about Ketoconazole. "If recurrences become bothersome it may be useful to take stronger medication using antifungal pills ketoconazole (Nizoral) or fluconazole (Diflucan). These medications will usually hold down vaginal and oral thrush if used. However, over time, the fungus may become used to these medications and the medicines may not work as well. " "Ketoconazole (Nizoral) or fluconazole (Diflucan) can cause side effects (rash, nausea or abdominal cramps) and can interfere with the action of other medications. They also require monitoring for liver and kidney problems. On the other hand, for many women who have suffered with constant vaginal thrush, weekly oral medication provides great benefit. Talk with your doctor about whether taking medicine to prevent chronic vaginal yeast infections is right for you." You're welcome. Being sexually active or not doesn't mean that someone won't get a yeast or bacterial infection. Even young girls taking antibiotics for an ear infection can get a yeast infection."
