What are the comon side effects for methotrexate when used for ectopic pregnancies? I was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy 2 weeks ago. Last Friday I was given 2 shots of methotrexate. I just began bleeding and cramping heavily yesterday and I'm concerned. It is so bad I can't even work, let alone barely stand. Up til yesterday I had no side effects or symptoms. Also today I just got blood taken and was told my HCG level only dropped in half. Is that normal?
egomezz007 replied: "Yes that is what they want with methotrexate. The reasons they give you the injecions is to avoid surgery. With ectopic pregnancies there is such a high rate of surgery that with methotrexate what it is supposed to do is dissolve the tissue... the pregnancy. The levels should just keep dropping and that would be an effective course of therapy.
Ask them for something for the pain. Hopefully they will give you something.
Hope you feel better."
Monica L replied: "Sorry for your loss.
Yes that is normal-many women's bodies react differently though. Similar to a miscarriage-body is "shedding" the pg. However, if pain doubles you over you might have to be careful of a rupture-pain would be enough for you to go ER."
Has anyone had any experience of being treated with methotrexate for ectopic pregnancy? Can you tell me about results, side effects, pain, number of shots and dosage needed, and so on? Please answer if you had similar experience or if you are a doctor!
airpole replied: "Well,
I'm really sorry for the problems you are facing. It seems they have no end. Hope that things will get better and you will be in good health and everything solved.
As regards to methotrexate, I was suggested it by a well known Doctor as a cure to psoriasis that I suffer from. However, when I looked it up on the web I found that it only works on a temporary basis and it carries all the side effects of cancer chemotherapy. Hair loss, nausea, and all the relative side effects.
Please get as much info on it before you use it and to what extend its use will solve the problem.
My best wishes to get out of your problem the soonest to be among your friends."
What can expect after methotrexate shot for ectopic pregnancy? I am 35 and I just found out that my first pregnancy is ectopic. Low hcg hovering between 160 and 150 over a weeks time. I was administered the shot on Tuesday afternoon, but now it is Friday I am not really noticing too much yet. I have off and on bleeding (a little bit heavier than the spotting I previously had), but I don't really notice too much else. Any insight would ease my mind. Thank you...
Nkechi E replied: "My dear is like you have an open in your womb that is while you are having off and on bleeding. As you said that your first pregnancy is ectopic, kindly go to your doctor for advise and operation before it is late. Do you know what ectopic pregnancy is all about?. It is a pregnancy outside the womb. And it used to disturbed. The reason why the bleeding is a bit heavier is because of its abnormal position. Pls see ur doctor for more advise."
Riveting Rosie replied: "You should continue to have your HCG levels checked to make sure they are falling. My understanding is that the bleeding is normal with methotrexate, but heavier bleeding is not a sign that it is (or is not) working.

"What Methotrexate does, is prevent the trophoblast cells from dividing. Trophoblast cells are the invading cells of the pregnancy and those that form the afterbirth or placenta. It is these that rupture the tube, cause the pain and have the potential to cause internal bleeding to the mother. Once these cells no longer divide, the pregnancy is ended and the whole pregnancy sac, including any cells that might have grown into a baby, is usually reabsorbed by the mother. This is normal and happens in many cases of miscarriage. You may feel pain after being given methotrexate but this is due to the pregnancy sac swelling and not due to effects on the baby. The tube, however, may remain blocked by the pregnancy tissue which can take some time to shrink. Occasionally it may not shrink and will leave a blockage in the tube, by way of a small cyst. However, the use of Methotrexate does not reduce the chances of successful future pregnancy, no matter the outcome in the affected tube.
Women sometimes find treatment with Methotrexate quite a long and drawn out process. This can feel frustrating but the outcome is often very successful and worth persevering with the wait involved for the hCG levels to drop, and the repeated blood tests, until that happens.
[...]
The response of women to treatment with methotrexate varies greatly. The bleeding is from the lining of the womb and is hormonally controlled. It will probably last a week or two, changing in colour from red to brown and diminishing. As long as it is not too heavy, and is not associated with pain, you should not worry. Some women report bleeding and spotting for up to six weeks."
Please keep in touch with your doctor if you have any concerns. Ectopic pregnancy isn't something you mess around with--it can be life-threatening."
How long after an ectopic pregnancy is treated with methotrexate can you start trying to concieve again? My last pregnancy was an ectopic and it was treated with methotrexate by one injection and was told not to try to concieve till after 6 monthes. But have heard others trying right away, like within a month. We are anxious to try again but, scared that if we start trying again of running the risk of another loss, or even birth defects. Any advice?
Conner's Mommy replied: "they told you to wait 6 months because it is not safe so i would wait."

How long does it take for an ectopic pregnancy to dissolve after taking Methotrexate? I recently took an injection of methotrexate to treat an ectopic in the beginning of Jan. It is end of the Feb. and my beta levels are low at 9, but last week it only dropped by one number? It seems like a never ending saga!!! Has anyone else experienced this and how long does it usually take? I am hitting about 2 months now??
Any help would be appreciated.
ventmanswife37 replied: "i had a ectopic PG and got the MTX shot on 8/5/08. My numbers to start with were 3973. I didnt hit zero until 10/13. I know the waiting is unbearable! Hope everything clears up soon for you..9 is very very close."
SZO replied: "Based on research conducted with 77 women who had an ectopic pregnancy, around 74 women were successfully treated with methotrexate. They started with average beta levels of 25923771 IU/L with a mass size of about 2-3 cm. It took an average of 1-6 weeks for everything to clear.
Since the duration of treatment is dependent on the initial beta levels and size, if you are already at 9, I would give it a week or two weeks more."
I was given a shot of methotrexate for my ectopic pregnancy last night at 1am ? I haven't bled yet? When is it suppose to start?

Ectopic pregnancy and methotrexate question? I was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy 12 days ago and given a dose of methotrexate to remedy the problem. All this a huge surprise as my tubes were tied almost 8 yrs ago! Anyhow, I am looking for feedback on when I might feel better. I have only slight bleeding for 3 days now, still slight pain on the left side occasionally and only very mild cramping. My levels has shown a 50% decrease at this point, but I am concerned about how well it is working given not much bleeding here. Can anyone tell me how long it took them for the ordeal to be over?? Thanks for any answers and support you can give me, I have nobody I know that has experienced this to ask and when I search the web I don't come up with any real time frames or how bad I can expect it to get. Honestly thought after 12 days I would be done by now.
sokokl replied: "Because of how long it has been since you had this done I would recommend following up with your dr to be on the safe side."
Pamela H replied: "Hi, I feel your pain. I had 1 dose treatment 18 days ago. Like you i just wish i knew how long this could last. I have looked for more info, but I can't find anything. I have been bleeding for 6 days now and still have pains in my side. My levels finally wnt down 6 days ago. I don't know how long it takes for them to go back to normal. I also still wonder if there is still a chance for rupture. Sorry, I'm know I'm not any help. If you get any answers, please let me know. Thanks,"
kellymc replied: "Please Read....I HAD an ectopic pregnancy. I found out at 7 weeks I was pregnant, didn't even know, as i got my period on time. I found out on January 9th. I had to go to the ER, The hospital gave me a shot of methotrexate on January 17th. They say methotrexate is 90% effective. My levels were going down perfeclty. They started at 6,500, then 3,500, then 750. But just 18 days after the shot, my fallopen tube ruptured, I had to go to the ER and have surgery. I don't want to say this to scare anyone, but I want you to be careful. I lost 5 pints of blood and almost lost my life. It was very horrible. If you are working, I suggest taking time off, until this is all over with, no unnecessary stress. I had bleeding for about 3-4 days after the shot and a tiny bit of spotting here and there. The first few days you will have period like cramps. If your fallopan tube ruptures, you will know it. I am going to tell you what signs to look out for. It will feel like this: If it ruptures, you will feel very very constipated, like x 10. Your stomach will get alot bigger and it will be hard for you to sit down, especially. It will feel like you ate the wrong thing! soon after 20-30 minutes at the most, you will feel very dizzy, or near faitness, or pass out. You have no more than a few hours to get help, otherwise it's fatal. Bleeding internally, you need surgery. I don't wanna scare anyone, it's just a concern. If you feel any of these signs, PLEASE don't hesitate! call 911 and go to the hospital and tell them what's wrong. This doesn't mean it's going to happen to you, but it's a concern. There is still a chance it can rupture. I wouldn't want anyone to go through what I did. It sucked! I lost my left fallpoan tube. so I can still have kids but I only have one tube, not two. Once it ruptures, it's very very difficult for a doctor to save that tube. If the shot works for you, It will be over, when your levels reached 0 twice in a row. So I really hope the shot works for you and I will keep you in my prayers. good luck with everything."
Methotrexate for ectopic pregnancy? I found out yesterday through ultrasound that my pregnancy was ectopic since Im not real far along I was given methotrexate to help my body remove the baby. So I was wondering if any of you ladies got this shot before, if so how was your side effects? I did read up on it and I was wondering if you can share your experience so I kinda know what to look forward to.. thanks in advance!
Jonna TTC#1 replied: "I'm sorry hun I have never heard of that. I know that methotrexate is used for arthritis, but never heard of that before. Sorry that you have to do this, and there is always next month to try again!"
#2 jackie replied: "i had ectopic methotrexate done in nov. side affects are mild longer period some cramping mostly"
Has anyone been given a shot of methotrexate due to an ectopic pregnancy? This is not so much a question but a request for those who have to share their experience with me. I just received the injection on Friday 10/26. How long does the treatment last? How did you feel? When will things go back to normal? Did you get sick? Was it successful?
angie replied: "u should join the yahoo group on ectopic pregnancies. I had an ectopic in May but I had the surgery. And there are a lot of women in the group that can help u out."
Anyone here ever use or hear of using methotrexate for an ectopic pregnancy removal? I have ectopic pregnany and I am 6 weeks along they gave to three options, suction, the pill,or the metho injection whaich is better?
sry can't spell lol, I hope you all can get what I mean. I meant to ask which is the best way to go for removal...besides surgery.
aribelle replied: "metho is a pretty same way to go from what I have heard and read, I am sorry to hear about your pregnancy complication- Good Luck!"
concerned parent replied: "The only two methods I know of are surgery or the Methotrexate injection. Talk to your doctor concerning risks and benefits of both. And don't wait around or you may not be left with any options but emergency surgery. Web search there are a lot of sites where people talk about their experiences"
maky replied: "The pill is easiest. I went through same thing and a friend of mine had a regular abortion and did the suction which was painful. I took a pill and 24 hours later put the other 5 on my cervix and about an hour later I had the removal start. The pill is just like having a natural miscarriage except you take the pill. You experience cramping and lots of bleeding with clotting. After a couple of hours it goes away."
froggie972003 replied: "I had a etopic 7 years ago but I was only 3 weeks along, I took the pill because that way they saved my tubes. I think that was the best thing I could do because today I am currently 5 months pregnant with my second child"
