How can I relieve the side effects of the antibiotic CIPRO? I had a horrible reaction to the antibiotic CIPRO. I was taking 500mg two times daily. I've already contacted my doctor and have stopped taking it, but the side effects are lingering. I had horrible abdominal pain/discomfort along with nausea, vomiting, headache, light headedness, and dizziness. I haven't take the medicine in about 16 hours, but my stomach is still pretty upset. My doctor told me not to take antiacids or drink milk. Any ideas to rid me of this feeling, because I am starving but I feel too sick to eat. I have a wound on my foot that got badly infected, and I am allergic to amox/pen/sulfa so they prescibed CIPRO 500 mg twice daily for 10 days. I only took 4 doses. I havn't really been able to hold anything down. I tried drinking water yesterday and I vomited for about 2 hours. I tried eating crackers, vomited for another 3. I experienced the same sharp pains in my side just under my ribcage. I don't know if it is related at all, but I have also had the hiccups since 6 am.

crossbones668 replied: "Go to the ER. Get someone to take you. You are probably dehydrated and need an IV."

The Catalyst replied: "Get IV from doctors office ASAP, before the appointment drink plenty of water. You need to 'wash out' the Cipro from your system. Since you haven't had other symptoms, I think your kidney is holding it so far."

devious805er replied: "What were you taking Cipro for? I was prescribed the same antibiotic for some stomach problems that I've been having. I've only been on it for 2 days and I'm really hoping that it will clear what ever problems I'm having 'cause I am suffering from my stomach. It continues to really hurt and now after reading your questions I'm wondering if the Cipro is making it hurt instead of helping. What kind of pains are you getting? I have these nasty feeling butterflies and bad pains on the sides of my stomach. I hope you feel better though. I know how much it sucks to have stomach problems. I hope the both of us get better soon!!!"

ilovetopharm replied: "What condition were you taking the Cipro for? How long did you take it? It will take more than 16 hours for the medication to leave your body so hang in there - it will get better in a few hours. You should drink clear liquids that contain sugar (Sprite, Mountain Dew, ginger ale) and eat crackers. You can drink milk if you think your stomach can take it. You can take some over the counter Dramamine to help get through until the medication leaves your body. If you don't get better by tomorrow morning I would call your doctor back and he/she can give you something for the nausea and check to see if you have developed an infection in your colon due to the antibiotic (this is not very likely though)."

the symptoms are nausea, burning stomach- mostly after food or can be in the morning as well. Cipro can help? it all started in august with vomiting and the symptoms of intoxication, looked like the food poisoning , but it lasted more then couple days , i got concered. The vomiting disappeared and only nausea stayed. And the head was sort of spinning but not quite (the way like probably some people have when have intoxication of any kind). The doctors did a test on helicobacter, i was on medication for a while (three diferent types including amoxicillin) and PH increaser. Basically after two months later it didnt die. Now they put me on cipro. Still nausea and intoxication , mostly after i eat. The diet doesnt help much. I think i have start to have more pain in the stomach since summer. Anybody thinks helicobacter can really cause nauseaness, because of the poison it produces? Tests are all not so bad . I mean they havent found anything in them . Please help!!!

Sick from 2006 till present .Colitis ,mineures Disease , Hyper Hydrosis , can they all be related? Medical History , Looking for the Relation of my symptoms and maybe some insight into them. I am at the end of my rope and doctors dont seem to care. I am a 23 year old male . I was born with Cerebral Palsy and premature . The CP effects me by way of minor motor skill impairment and effects my left side more which makes me walk pidgin toed etc. It is spastic cerebral palsy which makes my muscles more tense then usual. I also have asthsma which was bad but barely comes and goes in the recent 5 years of my life. I was on paxil from 05-06. Feb 2006 About three months after stopping . I woke up one morning to being almost deaf in my left ear vomiting and having severe nausea. The docotor diagnosed me with Mineures disease and started me on prednesone for one week and did tympanic steroid injections which brought back most of my hearing in my left ear but i have constant tinnitus which flares up and fades since then till now . I then developed constant sweating under my arms they labeled hyperhydrosis . Previous to this i never even had to use antiperspirant because i was not a sweaty person. I then developed Colitis in December 2006 . I Battled with constant diarrhea and constant watery stool . I had severe weight loss and mal nutrition . I went from well built 185 pounds to about 150 pounds and looked like somone who was on chemo therepy . The doctors said they thought i had a yeast infection in my bowels so i started on a yeast cleanser . About a year later after taking probiotics daily a strong multi vitamin and eating very healthy .The Symptoms stopped Now within the last week. All the symtoms are back . They did a wheat gluten test . I am not allergic. They found my white blood cell to be high . I started on cipro floxin 2x a day for 10 days. I was fine for a year leading a normal life with only my ear ringing still quietly etc. Now i have a roar in my ear , Upset stomach , Im restless etc Can anyone help me , or think of what i can do to get an answer? Saw a ENT who diagnosed me with

iamchanginglives replied: "Hi, You are really having a bad time. Are you still taking the supplements? Apparently you had some success while taking them. All health starts at the cellular level. Medications interfere with many normal, natural things the body tries to do. I have heard testimonials of people overcome nearly everything you've mentioned with diet and supplements. They are very particular in what brand of supplements they use for best results - they are NOT all alike. Let me know if you want more info."

welig replied: "Disturbances of the functions of the intestinal tract and hearing problems can occur with cerebral palsy. Think of getting a suitable diet according to recommendations of a dietician. Most of your problems have to be discussed with your doctor. It is unfortunate that there is no proper cure for this condition."

maliboo_girl replied: "Wow, I really feel for you. I'm not a doctor, but I read a lot of medical stuff and I wonder about the Paxil. Symptoms of each of the issues you present with can be found with Paxil use or withdrawal. Did you have a physician supervise stopping your use of Paxil? Not extremely common side effects for most of them, but you can check out the Paxil info: (This is the same info you can find at the GlaxoSmithKline website, you can download a pdf there.) The other sort of connection I see is that it's possible they all may have some sort of neurological link. Your CP is most likely from brain injury due to being premature -- or CP can actually happen in utero and issues before birth may be the cause for prematurity. (My teen son was born at 23 weeks, and I've done a lot of research on prematurity.) CP can show up in all parts of your body (even affecting eating, digestion, etc), so I wonder if somehow there is some sort of connection. It is not uncommon for preemies to have issues show up as adults. Two you should watch for are high blood pressure and mental health issues. These are most common in the earliest preemies but possibly can happen in preemies who have issues like CP. I've decided it's better to know all this stuff even though I don't like hearing it - because I can act on it. I know I need to keep a watch on my son's bp more than I would if he weren't premature and also his mental health and make sure he's not having too much stress in school, etc. Better to be aware. Did the doctor check your pituitary gland? It seems like you need to see another doctor, maybe at a big health center where they can easily send you to a doctor in a different department if necessary. I don't usually like teaching hospitals, but you might find help at one. Think UCLA or a similar facility in your area. There are different types of the issues you mention, Colitis, Meniere's, and Hyperhidrosis, it may be important to know which types you have to know how they may be connected. I would also suggest looking on the internet for support groups for each of these issues and see if you can find anyone who is going through what you are. Please be careful of the scam cures and misinformation you'll find online. Can you work on controlling your stress levels? It appears all of those issues may be affected by stress. Walking is a great stress reliever, and you might want to try meditation, yoga or anything else that would work to release your stress. Take care and good luck in finding the answer."

Is it possible for side effects of a medication to occur after one has stopped taking it? My doctor had me taking cipro for a UTI twice daily for 3 days. My last dose was Monday. I did not experience any severe side effects while taking it. Last night (friday) I suddenly became very ill... severe nausea & dry heaves, chills, but no actual vomiting and no fever. Seeing as how I didn't develop a fever, is it possible that this was caused by the leftovers of the cipro and not caused by a viral infection?

MICHAEL replied: "It's possible because Cipro takes a while to leave your system completely. Still, keep an eye on it because it can be viral, also."

How long should it take to recover from a UTI/Kidney Infection? I had severe back pain, consentrated from my shoulder blades to my lower right side and at times left side. The abdominal pain was primarily on my left side. The pain would come in waves. After a few days of that, I began to feel nautious and started vomiting. I vomited for 2 days, then stopped vomiting for 2 days, but the pain continued. I once again started to vomit, so I went to a primary care center. They took a urine specimen, blood, x-rays and a CT. They said an acute UTI and sent me home with cipro. They said if I got worse, go to the hospital. They also said I had a low-density mass in the vacinity of my kidney and could not tell what it was. They said I would need a contrast CT done and to see a doctor. I began the cipro when I got home and felt much better. However that night I spent the entire night vomiting, and the pain increased in my abdomin. I went to the hospital. They gave me pain killers and anti-nausea medication, among other things via IV. I also went for a contrast CT and had more blood and urine taken. They suggested I stay, but didn't seem to have issue when I said I rather go home. The next day I went to the doctor. I was told my urine and blood came back good. It looks like I had a UTI and may be recovering from a kidney infection. It also appears that I may have had a small cyst rupture on my ovaries that would have caused the low-density fluid mass near my kidney. I was told the antibiotics should do the trick in the next 2 days. That was yesterday, today the back pain seems to be back, just not as severe. I had a ham sandwhich yesterday. That is the first food I have eaten and held down in a week. I have no desire for food and ate because I was hoping it would give me energy. When should I expect to see improvement? When should I be more concerned?

caramelsista05 replied: "i'll say you should see improvement within the next 2 weeks. If after 2 weeks you see no improvement go see the doctor again"

lilly of the valley replied: "get a 1 gallon jug of Cranberry juice (100% juice) and drink that in the next 2 days. It should get much better. Still, if the UTI is full blown you will need antibiotics from your doctor."

There are lawsuits against this medication, will taking it for 10 days cause the severe side effects? I am taking ciprofloxacin. I was also taking ibuprofen to take down my fever. Well i later find out that cipro can cause irreversible CNS damage, phototoxicity, diarrhea, neurological symptoms, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, malaise, dysaesthesia, eosinophilia, seizure disorders, chronic tendonitis, tendon rupture (esp. achilles tendon), hypersensitivity to sun exposure, muscle wasting, heart problems, increased risk of developing steven johnson syndrome, etc. And taking NSAIDS such as ibuprofen increase the risk of developing these severe side effects. I was taking them for two days. about 4 a day. I was NEVER told not to take ibuprofen! I was also never told about these sever problems that could develop from the medication. The FDA has determined that Ciprofloxacin poses a serious and significant public health concern. Why would a doctor give me this???????? and why wouldn't the pharmacist tell me anything??????? I have the pharmacy sheet but it just says don't take it with milk or calcium and that it can cause nausea and all the less serious side effects but it doesn't say any of the serious side effects. or not to take it with ibuprofen. Has anyone ever taken this with no problems? Would taking it for 10 days cause the side effects that are listed?

Funky Barracuda replied: "I highly recommend talking to a doctor about your concerns. Remember, pharmacists and doctors can make mistakes, so if you have a question, ask it! Its your body, make sure you know what goes into it."

Az R replied: "This is why wikipedia is not necessarily a good source for health information. This is a drug that is used by literally millions of people in the US per year. It is incredibly effective, and has a very broad spectrum of action against a wide variety of microorganisms - this is useful as you can't always culture a specific pathogenic bacteria in time to give appropriate care. As for why prescribing it, it's an appropriate treatment for an enormous variety of infections - in fact it's virtually the only one used for treatment of non-recurrent urinary tract infections. Tens, if not hundreds of millions of people have taken this drug without harm. Realistically, the only serious complication worried about is the achilles tendon fragility - and that's only worried about in people who are near professional level athletes, who engage in strenuous activity that puts a great deal of pressure on that area - things like marathon runners. Now, could you be one of the unfortunate who has one of those reactions? Sure. But the odds are in excess of a million to one against it, especially if you're not very elderly, have kidney or liver problems, chronic hepatitis, things like that. Remember, in the US it takes only a handful of people who have bad reactions to create a gigantic legal snarl - and this drug is a staple medication, one that has been used for decades with a more than acceptable safety record."

Doctor said I had a kidney infection but the urinalysis came back negative? I went to the doctor on Friday, for nausea, vomiting (green bile), pain under the rib cage, pain in the low back. I also had some chest pain, it felt like a giant weight was sitting on my chest and I was short of breath. I would have to stop while I was walking to take in a deep breath to catch my breath. I went to the doctor and he did a urine test. There was blood in my urine and a high WBC count in the urine. My blood pressure was slightly elevated and he seemed to be worried about my heart rate as it was very fast he said. I have also been feeling really fatigued and just generally under the weather. I do not have a fever but I have only run a fever a few times in my life so that is not abnormal for me. He said it was a kidney infection, and gave me a short of Toradol and a shot of an antibiotic. He also gave me a pre ion for a 10 day course of Cipro. I still have all of the same symptoms except for the vomiting and the nausea is not quite as bad. I am going to the bathroom about 5 times an hour but each time I go just a tiny bit of urine comes out. The doctor called me today to let me know the urinalysis was negative for any growth. Does this mean I do not have a kidney infection. And if so why am I still feeling all of the same symptoms.

Lee replied: "There is an infection somewhere if WBC is high. Blood in the urine can indicate kidney stones. ASk him to run more tests to see if he can find out exactly what is going on. Doctors like to treat just the symptoms so they have more time to see more patients and make more money. Good luck."

what is wrong with me? please i beg you help me? contemplating suicide? I have polycystic ovary syndrome, I was diagnosed 5 years ago. Recently I have been experiencing severe sometimes unbearable pelvic pain and pressure, rectal pain and pressure, weird bowel movements that go from constipation to diahrea hip and lower back pain, nausea and vomiting, reduced apetite and no thirst, and light vaginal and rectal bleeding. At the doctor she found only blood and pus in my urine, the other tests were conclusive. She assumed I had a bladder infection, gave me cipro and vicodin, and sent me home. I used the vicodin as directed, and it did help. But I ran out, and 3 nights later the pain became so horrible I went to the ER. They gave me morphine and some anti nausea medications and ran many many tests. They all came back inconclusive, except, yet again, blood in my urine. They sent me home with more vicodin. It is day 17 and no signs of stopping...still tons of pain, bleeding, and nausea. I have a doctors appointment again on tuesday but since the tests are all inconlusive my physician is starting to think im exaggerating. I have no insurance and cannot afford a laparoscopy or a colonoscopy, which is what the ER doctor reccomended. Sometimes the pain is so bad I think about killing myself. I feel like its never going to end and nobody can help me. The ER doc said he can do nothing except make sure Im not dying, and I'm afraid my doctor is too baffled to help me. I'm afraid if it gets much worse, I will kill myself. Please help me.

MONSTER replied: "My friend has endometriosis. Even though the pain and bleeding and everything is there, there is a cure for it. You need a new doctor. Surgery may be your way out of all of that. It was hers! You may also need a medical counselor to help you through your pain. They have doctors that give you therapy for healing and so on. It's what I am aspiring to be!! You're not alone in this, there are hundreds of people out there like this! I really hope it goes away and you get better! I hope you don't suffer anymore! You should try reading up on it as much as possible to see that other women are facing what you are and maybe they can help. Maybe there is a number or website you can go to that will help you! Other women perhaps with the same problem!"

Due in December replied: "that sounds terrible...i am sorry you are dealing with this :( don't give up, there is always something to help you. i think you need to find a new doctor. NO ONE deserves to suffer and be in pain, insurance or not, money or not. if you think your new doctor is too baffled-FIND A NEW ONE. your symptoms don't sound good, or normal, you need to get this figured out. have you tried researching your symptoms online to see what it might be? please, don't kill yourself or think about it. not over something like this. i am sure it is curable. just don't stop until you get answers! be persistent! it's your quality of life at stake. don't take no for an answer. find a new doctor or bug yours until you get the help you need. send me a message if you need to talk. i hope you get this all figured out soon. keep your chin up!"

Penney replied: "This sounds like a nightmare for you. It seems to me that you have received incorrect treatment. Do have a look at the link below and also click on Table 5 on that page which lists a series of drug treatments, none of which appear to be the pain medications that you have received. As this is an endocrinal problem, hormone therapy of some type is most likely to succeed. Don't give up! Surgery doesn't appear to be recommended."

Planet replied: "I wish I had an answer for you but I don't. I just know that you have to hang in there and not doing anything to yourself. When you see the doctor Tuesday make sure she understand how depressed you are over not getting any better. Getting a proper diagnose and treatment program often is a process of elimination which takes time. Make sure your doctor also knows about the ER visits so she can access the results of the tests. Please, please hang in there and if the doctor on Tuesday is truly at a dead end then get a copy of all the tests you've had and ask her for a referral to another doctor who might look at your situation with a fresh set of eyes. Good luck!"

Why am I sick all the time? I am too young for this!? I am 20 and I have been a medical assistant for a year and a half now but have been sick on and off ever since I can remember. Everyone blames it on being around sick people, but I've always gotten sick a lot. It used to be just sinus infections and colds about once a month, but now it has just gotten worse. I have been diagnosed with "viral gastroenteritis" twice this year - vomiting, nausea, high white count and had to go to the ER both times. Two weeks ago I got a yeast infection, and a bladder infection at the same time (caused by Strep B) - I took cipro and that cleared it up. Now I also have strep throat (Strep. type C) and can't even take my augmentin because I can't keep anything down.. I have taken tetracycline for acne (500 mg BID) for about 5 years now. I've been tested for Celiac disease which was negative. My Iron is usually low, but my TSH, chemistry, etc.. is all otherwise perfect. My white count generally stays in the high normal range. Right now with my gastroenteritis, it is 16,000. On an everyday basis, I stay nauseated. Whenever I eat greasy foods, my stomach refuses to absorb it and everything comes right back up. I don't even know what kind of doctor to see for my problems. An internist, allergist? If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them. I just need a place to start. Please help! Thanks!

chum replied: "i don't no about all the medical stuff but i would check to see if you have mold in or around your home bathrooms , kitchen ect"

jadamgrd replied: "See an Internal medicine Doctor if you can get in."

justabigfan replied: "I can tell you that your immune system is not functioning properly. It could be because of the long-term tetracycline use, or it could be an immune disorder. When I went through a couple of years of chronic infections of one kind an another, I was finally diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS). Eventually Fibromyalgia was added to the diagnosis. At least I know what I have and have a treatment plan for it. There was a lot of frustration between the symptoms appearing and finally finding the answers. Start with an Internist for a complete check up. He will refer you to any specialists, should you need one. Be as thorough with the new doctor as you were writing this. It's time to get to the bottom of this. You are too young to feel so lousy. I hope you find the right answers soon and begin your journey to feeling healthy again."

Quite a few symptoms...do they all link up to one thing? Ok...first off lets start off with this...I am 23 have 2 children and have never had any health problems (that I knew of) until October of 2008. I went to the er with terrible pain and vomiting, turned out I had a UTI...took the antibiotics and went to see my doctor to make sure it went away and it turned into a kidney infection and was ordered a CT scan...which turned out I had kidney stones in my right kidney. I guess I passes it...because for a little while I had no pain...well actually I had excruciating pain for about 20 minutes and then my back no longer hurt. But then a month later...back at the er with a kidney infection. Every month since October of 2008 I have had a kidney infection and some months 2. I have been given Cipro, Bactrim, Lavaquin, Amoxicilian...and none of them ever got rid of the kidney infection. In the past few months, I have noticed extreme fatigue, I can fall asleep just sitting here typing and I will have done nothing tiring that day (yes I am a mom but this is not the normal tiredness) I am always nauseated and vomit at least once a week. I have a rash all over my body that will not go away, it itches to the point that I make myself bleed. At night, this past week I have been experiencing difficulty breathing, fast heart beat and paralyzation of my body for a moment before I can finally move and am able to breath. Some mornings I wake up and from my waist down to my feet I have the most eexcruciatingpain that its miserable to get up and get to my son. I also only have one partner, when we do have sex, when we normally don't because it is normally very painful...our sheets end up covered in blood (while I am not menstruating). I had an ultrasound done today for my pelvis and kidneys and see the DR in the morning, I just don't feel right. My body feels like its falling apart. Has anyone else had these experiences, if so...what was it...I know I see the dr in the morning but after 10 months of this...I am just getting scared and the pain and nausea getting worse. Does this sound like kidney disease?? Any info would be great. Additional Details If it helps any, I was 16 when I gave birth to my first child and had complications with both children. Took nearly a year to get pregnant with my second child. My mom had endometreosis and ended up having to have a hysterectomy. She also has fibromyalgia and neuropathy. I have had the problem with major blood during intercourse since I was 15 (Yes, 15 was too young for sex) I would really only like replies from people with experience...you may also email at
