Has anyone else switched from Paxil to Effexor? I was taking Paxil (40 mg) for 7 years. It worked for the anxiety the whole time but stopped working for the depression. 8 days ago I was switched to Effexor (150 mg) and I feel like I drank 10 cups of coffee and it is hard to focus. Does this get better or should I take half a dose tomorrow?

tjallen24 replied: "never been on either one"

wm replied: "talk to your pharmacist or doctor or phone a health line. some pills work others dont so talk to a health professional."

Sue L replied: "I'm on Effexor too, & I know that sometimes I get like that- crazy hyper, fidgety, can't sit still, etc. I am on 110 mg myself, which is a very low dose, & I took 150 ml by mistake the other day, & I was boucing off the walls..lol! U probably just need to be on a lower dose, like 110 mg. Talk to ur DOC..."

ASR replied: "I take 300mg Effexor and do very well on it. I built up to this dose over time. It might take a few weeks for the your body to adjust. I would not recommend messing around with your dosage that is something for the doctor to determine. If you are taking Effexor XR it is extended release and a certain amount stays in your system working until the next dosage is administered. If you are willing to wait and see how it will work for you then give it a chance. If not then you should schedule an appointment with your Doctor to discuss other medication options. I have had medicines stop working for me like the Paxil did for you. It could be that if you try something different for a few months your Doctor might be willing to but you back on Paxil. That is what I had to do with Trazodone. I was on it for several years then it stopped working. I went on a two different medicines, one after the other for two years, then went back on the Trazodone. I just needed a break from it. Maybe that is what is happening to you."

Is it ok to mix Paxil and Effexor? I have been on Paxil for a really long time and recently I started taking Effexor for energy and maybe because I'm a little bit scared to get off Paxil. The way they work seems similar. but is it ok to mix them? (I've been doing it now for about a month.. They are not of the same family

That DIFFERENT Teacher replied: "Danger of serotonin syndrome. Very dangerous. Consult doctor about what to do next."

PenelopeM replied: "Call your doctor. DO NOT take multiple meds of the same family at the same time without the approval of your doctor. This practice is the same thing that caused all the Acetaminophen problems earlier this year...people who were on prescription Vicodin (which has acetaminophen as one of its components) were also taking Tylenol (which, again, is Acetaminophen). This was leading to liver toxicity or liver damage. I cannot emphasize enough: CALL YOUR DOCTOR. Your health care provider (your primary care provider) should know and needs to know EVERY medication you are on, whether it is by prescription or "over the counter." This means your Flintstones vitamins, too!"

is it ok to switch from prozac, to effexor to paxil cr? i only took 2 10mg of prozac, that didnt agree with me. waited a couple days then took 1 effexor xr, that didnt agree with me either. i waited a few days and took my paxil cr (all under doctors orders) paxil cr works the best for me. is that ok?

smarties replied: "fallow your doctor's orders."

misoma5 replied: "you didn't state what side effect you got with prozac and effexor. I find it hard to believe that after taking one paxil cr, you had an effect. Usually you have to take these types of meds for like a week to get the desired effect."

Philip Kiriakis replied: "This is strange, first because one does not usually discontinue an SSRI after just a couple of days- as the poster above indicates. Second, Prozac and Paxil are both SSRIs, one having a much longer half-life, and the other havig a distinctly shorter one. I would think that as for side effects, if Prozac caused nasty ones, Paxil would be worse. Doctors aren't always right of course, but if you believe Paxil is o.k., (it has not had negative side effects)- then I should say it's just fine....."

Switching from Paxil to Effexor? I s it normal to get "flu like" symptoms when switching from Paxil to Effexor? Will I lose weight from switching? I gained about 80lbs on Paxil. Is it better to take Effexor at night or morning? Any bad experiences drinking alcohol with Effexor (I take it for anxiety not depression)?

Shannon replied: "I just recently switched from Prozac to Effexor and havn't had much problem, nothing more than your usual anti-depressant side effects.. it's the first time I've had muscle twitching as a side effect though! I've had no problem drinking alcohol while on Effexor. I take mine at night because I believe, as most anti-deressants do, it makes me sleepy. I also take Wellbutrin, which is supposed to counter-act some of the side effects. I think I would call your doctor if I were you and ask about the flu-like symptoms, I don't think that's supposed to happen. And good news to ya, the Effexor really suppresses my appetite. Not as much as Pro zac did though! I think they all react differently in different bodies. Good luck!!"

confused replied: "ts always hard to say how one medication will effect each individual person. There are side effects to almost every medication on the market.I think asking people their opinion can be dangerous. The majority of people don't really know what they are talking about and that is how misinformation is past along. You need to make sure that you are being prescribed any psychiatric medication from a specialist not a general practitioner this could avoid much wasted time. Antidepressants fall into various classifications SSRI,SSNRITricylic, MAOI's.....etc. Lexapro is a newer generation of Paxil., and is prescribed for depression with anxiety with less side effects. I cant imagining the Effexor in Laue of paxil. Effexors most complained about side effect is lack of energy and weight gain(some) You really need to understand your depression, what type, its severity, and when accompanied by anxiety you really need to understand where the anxiety stems from. Anxiety can be a symptom of depression as well depression can be caused by anxiety. Sometimes there is no one pill for the cure.I have been working in this field for 15 years and I have dealt with both for many years and have learned that medication alone is not always the cure but a tool to aid in the cure while working with a mental health professional. I'm not sure what kind of Dr. you are seeing but I hope for your sake its a Psychiatrist w/ a therapist. I take a benzodiazapine for my anxiety as needed. My anxiety is situational and I don't always need medication. Over the years I have accumulated allot of knowledge with psych drugs (just a term we use in this field of work) my advise is always start small w/ the anti depressants. Prozac is an older generation SRI that has had gangs of clinical trials, minimal side effects, a stimulating effect as compared to sleepiness as well as a tendency to curb your appetite (personal experience on this) Unfortunately, its hit and miss with medication and there are so many out there. Just remember before you give up on any one medication to try it at least 2 to 3 months and never stop taking it without letting your Dr. know. I wish you all the best!"

I'm always tired and never feel rested. I feel exausted all the time. I take paxil and effexor for depression Do you think the medicine is making me so tired or possibly a medical condition I'm not aware of.

Brian replied: "sleep apnea? check into it."

saintsking25 replied: "go on to youtube and drop yo pants and jack that hotdog off. TRUST ME IT WORKS"

Violet Pearl replied: "1. Yes those drugs can make you feel very tired 2. Other medical conditions that make you feel tired are thyroid problems, anemia, low ferritin and hypoglycemia. The first 3 would need blood tests to determine. Hypoglycemia can be diagnosed with a blood test or, much easier - by taking this quiz."

Tommy replied: "How is your sleep? I reciently found out that I have a sleep disorder that is leaving me tired "all" the time too. I think you would do well to look into this."

mercury replied: "Yes, those medications can certainly cause the symptoms you describe. However, these are all also symptoms of depression itself, so it is difficult to know which it is in this case. There are other medical conditions that can cause these symptoms, but it is most likely the depression itself, or the medication. Bring this up with the doctor prescribing your meds. There are antidepressants that are NOT sedating that might suit you better. If the exhaustion cannot be addressed by a change in medication, then the doctor will look into other possible causes."

which do you find is best for anxiety?(paxil, lexapro, effexor or zoloft)? i am seeing a psychiatrist and i tried for awhile paxil and then for awhile lexapro but neither really helped me. now i'm trying effexor. so which is the best out of the four overall? but really bc two of them already didn't work, which is better effexor or zoloft?

gardensallday replied: "Boy, I think those are all SSRI antidepressants. I wonder why he/she didn't try a different class of medication?? Buspar is in its own class. Don't get hooked on the benzos such as ativan, xanax, etc. They are addictive and can cause short term memory problems. I have found that dressing warmly, doing meditation tapes (guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation) and taking hot baths helps a lot. I have bipolar disorder and cannot take any anxiety meds, and those above tips have helped. Maybe they will help you in the meantime. Oh, exercise helps too. Good luck!"

mandy j replied: "celexa, zoloft didnt help for my anxiety"

john h replied: "i have anxiety and i took paxil and seemed ok but i switched to effexor and that seem better but what i found out after a while is that diet stuff with sugar replacement stuff in it would trigger anxiety attacks ,I am not sure what that additive is but it says after the ingrediants contains Phenylane or somethiing like that but if you have panic attacks talk to your dr. about adavan or xanax that will help also"

Bobby M replied: "the medication as well as the dosage of the medication is strictly a person experience thing, what works for one maay not work for another, all of the meds need at least 6 weeks of the dose finally decided on for you by the Doc for you to be sure if it works, Side effects are usually the determining factor on whether you change drugs before a suitable time period. IF anxiety is your MAJOR problem you might ask why your Doc is prescribing anti depressants NOT anti anxiety agents.....all of what you have listed are anti depressants, check any med book online or at the library , google, Yahoo or MedlinePlus... look up anti anxiety and antidepressants, you will find they are different.... So maybe you and your Doc are not communicating well......."

jamgerky replied: "a antidepressant are good for anxiety cuz when your depressed you have high anxiety..but remember..these drugs are only good for generalized anxiety..if you have bad nerves you might need a benzodiazepine..in the class are( xanax,klonopin,valium,attiavans,libream)..i was on about all of the ones you have listed!!now im on seroquel 100mgs..not bad at all......good luck too you!!!!"

whats the best anti depressant on the market besides effexor and paxil ? ive already tried effrxor and paxil, they didnt work

zerokool26 replied: "ZANAX"

ragdollhere replied: "lexapro"

Sunny replied: "I wanted to send this to you written in response to someone asking a similar question: "Your physician will make that decision based on your symptoms. There are several effective medications to treat depression in tricyclic family, SSRIs, and antipsychotics that are all effective in treating some forms of depression so that positive changes in a persons life may be made. Keep in mind, that what may work well for one person, may not work out so well for another. Medication isn't a quickfix. Originally the antidepressants were prescribed for short term use so that whatever was causing the depression could be dealt with, then the antidepressant weaned off. But that thought has gone out the window of late. Medication may be a quickfix for you, but then again, it may not be. Depends on your expectations and willingness to deal with causes. Do have your doc discuss side effects to watch for with whatever medication he has decided is right for you.""

awales6 replied: "Xanax is for anxiety not depression. There are many different kinds of antidepressants out there. You and your doctor just need to find one that works for you. Everyone reacts differently to meds and just because one works for one person doesn't mean it will work for you. I have severe major depression and have been on several different ones. Some worked better then others but you have to keep trying until you find the right one. Effexor and paxil didn't work for me either. Here are some that I know of prozac, lexapro, zoloft, wellbutrin, cymbalta and the newest one is Prastiq which I take with Prozac and I'm doing pretty good with this combo. Hope this helps!"

paxil vs effexor? I am currently on Paxil and am finding a lack of motivation and weight gain. I used to go to the gym at least 3x's a week and now I don't have the desire or energy. All I want to do is eat. Heard Effexor has the opposite effect. I have anxiety and depression and just finishing menapause. Thoughts?

justme replied: "Seriously check into Effexor. I stayed on the paxil because I was worried about all the side effects. Have you talked to your Dr. about changing the does?"

deshane2530 replied: "I agree with you on that one. Talk to your doctor about this. They will switch it for you more than likely. Sometimes it takes trying different ones to see which have the least side effects."

dani_california replied: "effexor is worth looking into because it can be quite effective. but i for one do not like it. missing one dose gives you awful withdrawl, where your brain feels like its being electricuted, and you just feel like vomiting and uck, i hate it. also, the effect wears off quite quickly. but, yeah .. as I said it may work for you, so do some research, and speak to a doctor :)"

Silly lil Me replied: "I was on paxil for 3 years and let me tell you now...the withdrawl symptoms were the worst thing in the world. Be very careful when coming off of it. I have now been on lexapro for about 4 years and have no serious side effects like I had with paxil (just like you weight gain, and no energy)."

Jolene G replied: "I heard paxil is one of the worst meds to be on. I was on effexor and that didn't work for me either. I finally started takin Cipralex and it is great. No side effects or nothing. And coming off of them is not bad at all. I heard paxil is hard to come off of."

I just switched from Paxil to Effexor because of weight gain...? from paxil... Should I expect the same from Effexor? I know it has a weight loss side effect, but you never know.

bry7josh replied: "Hi hun! I just started effexor a little over a month ago. It has helped me with my anxiety and paranoia a lot. I have had no side effects from it. I have lost weight, it does not make me hungry at all, so I hope its true for you, just try and see. I hope you don't get any side effects from it. I heard it can cause shaking and nervousness, but it didn't with me. Hugs! Von"

Paxil and Effexor? What is an equivalent dosage of Effexor when you've been on 30 mgs of Paxil? My doctor gave me 75 of Effexor but I don't know if the dosage is the same.

steven m replied: "75mg of Effexor is the recommended dosage for a number of different conditions (anxiety related). If you're taking it for an anxiety related condition this dosage is fine. Recommended dosages of Paxil vary a little more, but generally speaking dosages usually range from 20 - 50mg with 50 being the max for treating anxiety, etc. 30mg is a standard dosage and so is 75mg."
