Is there anyone who have or are taking prozac? Any good news about it? I just started taking prozac but I am scared of taking meds and I really need someone to talk to someone who has taken it and who is fine.

serendipitied376 replied: "I've taken it for several years now, and I can understand your concern. It has worked for me, and because I understand I do have a chemical imbalance I understand that I will be taking it for the rest of my life. It does make a difference, it does take a bit to get in your system. If it does at all make you feel weird or sick talk to your doctor about it."

mamabear replied: "I only took it for one month, as I gained a tremendous amount of weight from it in that time. However, a lady I worked with said that Prozac saved her life--made her a new person. She had been unable to work (or even go outdoors) before going on this medication. As with most medications, the results vary by the individual taking it. Keep all doctor appointments--so that the doctor can monitor your progress and adjust the doseage appropriately for you (or change you to a different medication, if necessary). I wish you well, and hope that it works for you. I have never heard of anyone who had terrible side-effects from Prozac, so I wouldn't worry about taking it until it's in your system for around a month--that's when you, and your doctor, will know how it is doing in your case."

damiana112 replied: "People have said a lot of scary things about anti-depressants, which just scares people into not getting the help they need. Mental illnesses are biological issues, just like diabetes and need to be treated with medication. Prozac is a safe drug that can really help a lot of people with depression. I was on it for several years and had no problems and lots of positive help from it. If you are female you may have problems with vaginal dryness which can be solved with an over the counter lubricant."

Wraithwind replied: "I tried to stay away from that stuff and read up on herbal stuff called St. John's Wort. It has the least side effects of all the antidepressent/anxiety stuff. I tried a few brands and they didn't work, then I tried one more that was "prescription quality" and that helped alot with my anxiety and depression. Couldn't tell you about prozac though, but if you feel safer with herbal stuff you can try that. There is a site about people using it and has a list of effective brands."

tcconssw replied: "I have been taking Prozac for 3 years now. It works for me so well, that if I run out, my oldest kid says" Mom, go to the pharmacy NOW, You have to have your Prozac!!!!" It works really well for me. It worked almost immediately for me. There are times that I still feel the depression and think I should probably get my dosage up ed, but after a few weeks I seem to even out again. I am not sure what that is about. In Dec. I tried to get off of them with the help of my Dr., we both thought that since mine stemmed from post-partum depression that I should be okay, but BOY were we wrong!!!!!!! After 3 weeks I went NUTS!!! ( That is what I call it when the depression hits and you no longer like yourself or anyone else and just want to stay in bed) Prozac does not work for everyone and should be monitored closely for the first few months, I wish you the best of luck and please, if you do not feel better w/i a month talk to your Dr. to get your dosage up-ed or a different Med."

dina w replied: "I have suffered so rmany years with a depressive anxiety disorder, some times far worse than others - in some ways I have just learned to live with my personal maddness, even though it diminishes the quality of my life its easy for me to ignore...my loved ones feel differently. I can not fly in a plane, I cant go anywhere by car unless I drive (and then I have a pretty small world I dont go far). I cant sleep without the tv on...pretty tough on a family to go on vacation when mommy is like that. I have had many mini break downs, the last one being bad enough to start me on an anti anxiety med, which has helped, but I cant walk through my life seriously drugged either so my dosages are VERY small. The doctor has tried to give me anti-depresants before and I never took them as to the great fears I have about side effects and potentially feeling more awful than I all ready do. My fear level really goes up. Then on Wednesday of this month I went for a physical and somehow the convo rounded back to this depression/anxiety topic, I have consented to try the prozac and will start a 10mg dose when I am done posting this - I feel your fear and trepidation, so in my heart I will walk this new journey with you as I attempt to let myself find a way to enjoy my life a little more. Post often please as will I maybe we can be the success stories we read about together and good luck!"

Surprise, surprise, what do you think about this news - PROZAC? LONDON (AFP) - Best-selling anti-depressants like Prozac and Seroxat are barely more effective than placebos in treating most people with depression, according to a study published on Tuesday. The research, which analysed 47 clinical trials, breaks new ground by incorporating data not previously released by drug companies which researchers obtained under US freedom of information laws. Its findings prompted some academics and mental health campaigners to question whether people with mild and moderate depression should be prescribed drugs like Prozac, which has been taken by 40 million people worldwide. "The difference in improvement between patients taking placebos and patients taking anti-depressants is not very great," said Professor Irving Kirsch of Hull University, who led the team. "This means that depressed people can improve without chemical treatments. "Given these results, there seems little reason to prescribe antidepressant medication to any but the most severely depressed patients unless alternative treatments have failed to provide a benefit." The study, published in the journal PLoS (Public Library of Science) Medicine, looked at Prozac, Seroxat, Effexor and Serzone and found the drugs were only better than a placebo for some people with severe depression. Kirsch's team said it was one of the most thorough probes into the impact of new generation anti-depressants or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Drug companies strongly questioned the findings. Why wouldn't they? Must put a dent in business if they have 40 million users. Just goes to show there is some truth to the old addage PHYSICIAN HEAL THYSELF. I don't think so Olly. This research looked into over 40 STUDIES by pharma companies, and considered the DATA which they LEFT OUT of the studies. Pharma companies have a way of gearing everything to come out their way. Look at the bloopers they've made on meds which PASSED the studies and later were revoked because they caused deaths. This drug is known to cause as many of the problems it's supposed to CURE....I'm sure we've seen evidence of THAT too. Bullet, I wonder if most people know that ADD/ADHD drugs are addictive narcotics. On a true ADHD patient they work, but for someone misdiagnosed and on this drug it makes them so unbelievably sick, they lose weight, they can't sleep, and in the end they end up addicted to the narcotic (which is why many adults turn into drug addicts - SPEED).

Olly G replied: "All cases are different so I dont think you can be so general and say they have no affect - I haven`t done research into their effect but they are used to treat all types of things and thus untill a wide variety of reserch has been taken into the subject - id take this latest information with a pinch of salt"

spdrmnky replied: "Doesn't suprise me one bit. It has been illustrated in hundreds of articles and hournals that Prozac is one of the most over distributed drug in the world. Overdiagnosing is listed in the DSMIV-TR in several chapters to illustrate the importance of all of the incorrect diagnosis of ADHD, ADD, Depression, etc."

FairesRuleTheLand replied: "No wonder it's all in the head!"

just heard a news report saying prozac type drugs are best for adolescent depression, i think that's greed why not raise your kids right instead, if you messed up in raising your kids right i'm sure they'll grow up messed up and no pill can correct all the mistakes you made or allowed your child to make, kinda deceiving when you want to help your kid but you really hurt your kid

right on replied: "so dammmmed true. meds are NOT the answer. take away the violent vid games and such horse crap, put that kid out on a bike, in the fresh air and sunshine. only the RAREST of kids in my generation was truly depressed, and for good cause. and this attention deficit disorder! BAH! in my day, the best cure for that disorder was a slap up-side the head to GET one's attention, and believe me! We would hear what was being said to us after that! and, no, this is NOT sarcasm. kids today are soft!"

The Queen of Phuket replied: "when i was growing up they did not drugs to kids (and adults) like they are doing today. its really sick. you are right it is greed."

nursegrl replied: "Depression is a disease just like any other disease and is caused by chemical (neurotransmitters) imbalances in the brain. Parkinson's disease is caused by not enough dopamine (a neurotransmitter) in the brain and opposite of Parkinson's is schizophrenia, which is caused by too much dopamine in the brain. There are too many diseases that are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain to list here. But I would like to point out that if a child is raised poorly or is neglected, that can put alot of stress into that child's life. Stress that is not properly dealt with causes a hormone called cortisol to build up in the body and the ill effects of that include ^ weight gain or loss, ^ blood pressure, depression, and that list goes on and on, too. While I will concede that not all children/ppl who are depressed or act out need to be medicated with Prozac type drugs, but for those who really need them, they are a God-send. The problem with medicines is that they are developed for and tested on adults, not children. So prescribing them for teens and children is sometimes a 'crapshoot'. I used to think that ppl who were depressed needed to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps", but that was before I experienced depression after an accident, my house burning down, the loss of use of my arm which resulted in me losing my job, and my grandfather's passing in a 2 mo time period during the holidays. Ever tried living in a hotel room with 4 kids for 2mos straight after losing everything you worked your entire life for and with NO family in a 300 mile radius of you? Trust me....it was depressing to say the very least. Thank God for Zoloft! I'm happy you dont suffer from depression and hope you never do."

sgtcosgrove replied: "What a brilliant solution! But what if you did not raise your kid right or what if their depression is due to school related harassment or bullying? What if they just have a natural chemical imbalance in their brain (low seratonin, ect.) ? Throw them in the garbage and start again? Have you ever even MET a human being before? They're fallible, fragile and make mistakes."

Should I stop taking Prozac (in the light of today's news)? Today, it was largely reported by the media, especially in England, that new generation SSRI antidepressants such as Prozac and Paxil are not better than placebos, and just work for the severely depressed, and even that can be disputed. The thing is that I'm almost on my 3rd week on Prozac, mainly for OCD, and haven't really felt any better (on the bright side I haven't had any side effects). The study didn't mention anything about OCD which is another common usage for most SSRIs, they just focused on reports of depressed patients. Any experience or advice is welcome (unfortunately I can't talk with my doctor for the next 4 weeks since he is on a trip) Thanks everyone. I'll keep taking it. I think the media was largely sensationalist with the reports and I'll wait for reviews of this study. This link was also helpful (and this was published today): (Five antidepressants given for obsessive compulsive disorder all seem to confer twice the likelihood of modest symptom relief compared with placebo)

Red replied: "I wouldn't stop until I have seen my doctor."

islandhobbler replied: "dont stop taking it, sometimes it takes some meds up to 30days to settle in and take effect, to suddleny stop may cause problems you did not expect, and sence your dr is out of town, keep taking it for now, and 4 weeks will give it a good time to get in your system and start working."

yep replied: ""I recommend a fifth of Jack and a bottle of Prozac..." King Crimson, "Prozakc Blues""

Gorgonzola Cheese replied: "No just keep taking it for now, even if you don't think it's working. It might not be, but better safe than sorry, eh?"

Vannah<3 replied: "Ohhh no....I take Prozac. It took me at least a month for it to take effect and they've been increasing my dosage ever since. You really should try it before deciding not to take it. Plus, I don't know how, but when i forget for a while it makes me sick and depressed. Just try it! You may be surprised. Best of luck!"

hannova replied: "Don't suddenly stop medication without asking your doctor or pharmacist. Most pharmacies have no problem answering patients questions about medication that is prescribed. I'd ask there. As for your doctor, I bet that he has someone fielding his calls if he's away for weeks. Call the doctor's number and see if the service can direct you to the doctor currently taking his calls."

gardensallday replied: "Many studies have shown these drugs ARE effective for some patients, taking into account the placebo effect. So it wouldn't make sense to say that one study is right, when many others have shown that sSRI therapy works. That's one thing docs get frustrated with when the media report every study, but not in context of all the other info that is known. Prozac DEFINITELY switched me into severe mania when I took it, and i never had it like that before or since. And I didn't know i was bipolar, so it couldn't be a placebo deal. so I would wait until you see your doc. Prozac has an excellent safety profile and has been out for years."

Any thoughts about the America's military are given prozac on a mass scale ? Same with clanix.? It was in the news recently. I know Prozac is not a cure-all. My eyes are hazel

Blue replied: "If anyone is an american and not depressed there is something wrong w/ them. Id have to be numbed up too to fight in this mess."

m1a1mikegolf replied: "Those medications you mentioned are all prescription medications. As a result they can only be given to somebody after they have been examined by a doctor and the doctor orders that the medication be given to that particular person. Next time why don't you try using some critical thinking skills before you believe what the MSM claims."

Ray N replied: "Any thoughts on a post that makes a statement and does not back it up? The U S military does not do this But if they did it might be to keep them hurting a smug anti American kid But as you state ''I know Prozac'' I'm sure you do I never heard of clanix how does that work for y'all"

rotorhead replied: "Why not? We are doping/drugging a HUGE percentage of our children everyday to calm them down. And these kids only have to deal the the brutal stress of elementary school. Back in the late 80's, I was participating in one of our amphibious exercises down in Puerto Rico as a Forward Air Controller attached to a Marine Battalion. When we came ashore, it was covered with news people from all over the world covering the event. After about an hour of coordinating close air support missions with Harriers and Cobras, it got a little quiet and some of the reporters with cameras came up to me and asked some questions. The first question asked was what I thought about a "Brave Pill" the Army was trying to develop. I thought it was not a particularly good idea in that a "Brave" soldier might stick his head up at a time that he would otherwise not. (The interview later showed up as a 15 second sound bite on CNN). Same stuff, different name. It reduces stress and makes a guy less jumpy. Helps them relax between patrols. In WWII they gave the guys cigarettes (nicotine). In Vietnam they smoked pot. Today it's a little fancier. Less stress = less mental and physical health issues. I don't think the handing out of these drugs is wide spread because if it was, Obama would be using it in his stump speeches."

JP replied: "its becuase many soldiers are suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome simple ex. one of my friends brothers is a marine and just got back from iraq. well apparently hes having flashebacks in the middle of the night where he was in theyre yard yelling and screaming that "they" (iraqies) where surronding the left flank by the way I would go to the front lines and fight with nothing more than a pocket knife completely sober"

Brittany W replied: "Well the news only reports crap so the truth is that if a soldier has a problem then he/ she will go to the doc and have a check-up.......obviously you don't know but those medications are prescription meds so the doc gave it to them. It is not the military's fault for trying to take care of soldiers who are going through hell since they came back from Iraq and have problems!!!"

Papa McCain replied: "Are your eyes brown?"

Does prozac work to lift mood? I've read one fishy news article claiming it's no more effective than plaebos. After all the research that has been done on SSRIs, Can this be true?

Sam10 replied: "no. none of the anti-depressants work. you'll have to make changes on your own to be the happiest you can be. exercise helps as it releases endorphins- the feel good hormones."

Ly K replied: "Yes, Prozac does work to lift mood. I take it and it's working... I have been diagnosed with depression and I have anxiety problems. It could have adverse effects depending on your body chemistry though. However, it works the majority of the time. There have been many studies done to test Prozac and those studies show that it works."

Who puts Prozac in tap water? News sources reveal that there are traces of prozac in tap water- but who is putting it there and why?

richard h replied: "Nobody is putting it there. The people who take it are pissing traces of it into the toilet and its getting into the water supply."

Donna B replied: "Besides urine as the first writer has stated, people dispose of medications by flushing the unused, unwanted or expired medications down the toilet."

SCJPPRS replied: "Well it can't be in my water because I'm not any happier. But if there's prozac in the water, think of all the other dangerous prescription drugs that are in the water, lots of female hormones from birth control pills. It's effed up dude! EDIT: Sorry Kassie, but it is true. here's a link:"

Kassie18 replied: "I dont really think this is possible, because although the other two ladies make great points, that it could be from urine, or form people flushing it down the toilet. People flush tons of drugs down the toilet, includung illegal drugs like heroin and cocain. I am a drug and alcohol counselor, and the rehad I work in we search everyone when they come in, and some have drugs on them, and we flush them down the toilet. As well as all the drug addicts out there also urinate in the toilet, so if your saying there is prozac in the water from that then that would mean there are every drug in the world in our water including the illegal ones like heroine and coke, and meth, and I know thats not true beause the entire world would be walking around high all the time and probably die from mixing every drug in the world, so I highly doubt there is prozac in our water, but if there is thats not the way it gets there. Water goes through so many different purification techniques that there is no way what we urinate or flush down the toilet is in our drinking water, that would mean we were drinking urine, and I would be more worried about that than the prozac."

Melty M replied: "Me. Because I want the fish to smile : )"

How do you feel it would effect people, if for one week, no negative news could be broadcast, only positive ? Would politicians have anything to say? Would copycat killings fall? Would drug companies profits go down with lost Prozac sales?

yvanderstockt replied: "Sorry but in this kind of world it is not possible to broadcast positive news. The entire world is rotten caused by the imperiastic Americans."

The Gadfly replied: "I think the media would lose their audiences because it would be boring to people accustomed to what they report now."

williegod replied: "I would be ecstatic. Unfortunately, good news doesn't "sell newspapers" and, aside from their biases, the broadcasters are driven by one thing - profit."

Les replied: "There wouldn't be any news at all. But it is said that no news is good news."

cjlintexas replied: "no one would watch - the world is a messy, violent place. News pretending otherwise would simply be a lie and would not be trusted or watched"

moon37drop replied: "I think it would greatly effect people...I think people would feel safer... and the veiw that people are develping, that the world is too messed up to matter would subside. People are very susceptible to what the are told and what the hear."

vall replied: "That would be absolutely wonderful..but we all know bad thrilling news are selling better and have better audience..not only in news, it's everywhere like this..I guess people likes to be frighten and we can say danger is first thing human will react on..that's normal.. But I would like to live long enough to see something like this can happen..no bad news..or more important no bad things at all.."

sean_mchugh6 replied: "their tiny little heads would explode"

Epiphany replied: "Nice optimistic question. People would probably turn off the TV or radio because all the positivity sickens them."

thetaalways replied: "Since the whole purpose of news media is to create the idea of a "dangerous environment" constantly in the public mind, this seems an unlikely experiment. But you are right in your basic theory. Better to just stop listening, watching and reading the news for one week..... and see how much better you feel ! Prove it that way. Then promote the idea to your friends. I've already tried it and the effect is I feel tons better and my attention is not distracted and my outlook much more positive. I am happier more effective and focussed."

What kind of world do we live in when pets are on Prozac? I just heard this on the radio last week; it may be old news to you, but I couldn't believe it.

replied: "Those are people who have too much time and money on their hands."

Amanda replied: "the kind of world where i leave my Prozac on a low table and then in a completely unrelated event my pets are alot happier than i am."

One replied: "Read "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley and you may find out. and by tha way that is F****** ridiculous. Idiots."

MrsZ replied: "I know someone that lives in a tiny apartment and gives prozac to their Dalmation. Here's an idea, get a small dog suited to your small living space. It's insane. Like lack of parenting and ritalin, it irks me."

Marilyn: daughter of the moon replied: "Are those people high? There's no world like that."

Roswelldreamer replied: "Absurd."

Bunny*Boiler replied: "Yeah... I read about that several years ago... and yes, our world is kinda wacky, isn't it?"

freesumpin' replied: "Yes, how 'sensitive' are we getting? If you feed a dog non meat foods it is a form of animal cruelty?.?qid=20070709180916AAehS8U ."

lam replied: "I have used herbs on animals for years & its quite sucessful so why not pay big $ for prescripts. lol If you have the $. It is absurd.Ive seen that chin before."
