Do the side effects of prednisolone go away after I stopped taking the medication? I am currently on 20mg of prednisolone. The dosage was reduced to the current amout after taking it for six months. I am suffering from side effects such as severe acne flare ups, moon face, weight gain, insomnia, mood swings, occasional muscle pain, excessive growth of hair and stretch marks. I had asked the doctor about the stretch marks and he said that they will become less visible when i stop taking the medication but they will stay there forever. I am so depressed sometimes and really do not know what to do.I want to know whether if i will slim down and the excessive hair grown will drop when i stop medication?

Andee replied: "Yes, the side effects will go away once you have stopped the medication. However, with the weight gain you may have to go on a diet to lose some of it. Prednisone is such an icky medication. Works good, but side effects are awful. Hang in there, things will get better."

leanne replied: "ive been on prednisone on and off for 3 years now for kidney disease..it sucks i know...all those are normal side effects of the steriod: acne, insomnia, weight gain, muscle pain, even the depression...just hang in there keep in mind its not for long term use and your doctor is trying to get you off of it....i have been off of prednisone since i have used it the weight started dropping my appetite went to normal and the other side effects went away ...good luck i hope it all works out!!"

What are the side effects of Prednisolone in dogs? My mini dachshund was prescribed Prednisolone for severe allergies. She has already started gaining weight, and we were told that the medication might affect her Adrenal system. But I was wondering what specifically might we expect?

lyyman replied: "Prednisone is a strong steroid and should not be used for long periods of time. It does suppress the immune system, but sure does the wonders in stopping the allergic reactions, It worked well with me."

dobiegang replied: "Here is a site that will tell you all about the med & the side effects Just scroll down till you come to the info!!!!"

*Amanda* replied: "My dog was taking 2.5 mg of pred once a day for a disease he has called Addison's. The biggest side effects I noticed from the medicine were shaking, excessive thirst which leads to frequent urination, nervousness, and excessive hunger. When he first started it, the medicine seemed to make him act a little tired and depressed but that got better over time. The medicine is used in my dog to stimulate his adrenal glands to produce a hormone called cortisol which helps to run his kidneys properly. So since your dog does not need the extra boost of hormones you might notice some side effects from that as well."

blk_sheep_fl replied: "increased appette, and so weight gain...(the easiest fix for that is to reduce regular food slightly and add fresh or thawed frozen green beans to the food, and to divide the regular amount of food into two or three servings and feed several times a day) increased thirst...therefore a need to go out more often. those are the things you'll see. Ideally you're also testing to see what she's allergic to and taking steps to eliminate those things."

iluvtorofl replied: "Longterm cortico steroids do affect bones and organs. They cause the adrenal system to stop producing it's own steroids (cushing's disease). The disease should be more serious than the medicine if you choose to use them longterm. With severe allergies, longterm steroid use would be better than the final option of euthanasia."

how many months does it take to lose prednisolone side effects? please help these side affects are making me depressed!

Rhianna replied: "With regards to the side effects, are you talking about weight gain and mood swings/aggressiveness? I would say within a few weeks of stopping pred. you should start to feel better..."

Prednisolone, Side effects and how fast? Yesterday I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, and it was easy to diagnose, took 2months from my first hospital admission, which they first assumed Appendicitis. Ive been out of hospital for 1 day and on the drug for 2 days, and my shins are aching me and ive gotten the hiccups at least 7 times a day since being on prednisolone. Can a helpful person please reply to me if what im feeling is because ive been in bed for the past few weeks or because of Prednisolone. Im starting off at 40Mg's a day and will soon be lowered to 25Mg's a day. So what im asking is, if these are side effects of Prednisolone and if you could tell me some of the side effects of Prednisolone corticosteroids? More info: I am 6'3 and I have lost probably 15-20kilos in last 2 months due to Crohn's, my doctor has suggested high protein drinks and I assume the steroids will help weight gain as im barely healthy weight.

what if any are the side effects of taking prednisolone tablets in the early stages of pregnancy? took a 2 week course when i was about 2 weeks pregnant but didn't know i was pregnant.

michael b replied: "I DONT THINK YOU SHOULD BE ASKING THE LUNATICS ON HERE ....YOU SHOULD SEE YOUR DOCTOR STRAIGHT AWAY"

Poppy replied: "These are steriods, you should really speak with you Dr ,but there should not be any risk, and you did only take a short course do have a chat with Dr or midwife"

Twisty replied: "Jeez I hope you didn't die of boredom halfway through Rashnik's answer, I know I did. Prednisolone is a steroid which can be given to strengthen a baby's lungs in late pregnancy, for example if it looks like you will deliver prematurely. I don't know how many weeks pregnant you are, but you will have detailed scans throughout your gestation which will highlight every detail of your baby's vital organs. It's fantastic, and it'll put your mind at rest. I'm sure the dose you would have received will not do your baby any harm. It's just as important to make sure you are well enough to carry the baby to full term, so try not to worry un-necessarily. I'm sure many people have medication for asthma, or worse, all the way through their pregnancy, and still have a healthy baby. Good luck and congratulations! :)"

Eternal replied: "Your question was in the past tense, so I assume you took and finished the course and didn't suffer any side effects yourself from the tablets? So you are concerned with the possible side effect on the baby? I assume the two week course was a simple low dose due to say infection or asthma? OK. No drugs can be proved to be safe in pregnancy, because we do not do drug trials in pregnant humans for obvious reasons. So in general, we do not give drug to the pregnant unless there are considerable dangers in not doing so. Prednisolone is frequently given to women known to be pregnant, if the benefit outweighs the potential risk to mother and foetus. What are the risks? With a short course such as the one I assume you have taken the risks are VERY LOW. Regular or high dose treatment have some risks. Actually quite low with prednisolone as most of it (88%) is inactivated as it crosses the placenta. Specifically (with SHORT courses) NO evidence of clef lip or palate, or inter-uterine growth retardation. Similarly adrenal suppression is rarely clinically important. So my advise. Whats done is done. There is no antidote. Almost certainly nothing to worry about. Mention it to your GP, Midwife etc if worried and they may arrange scans. Nothing really that can be done one way or another. Check all future and current medication is suitable. Take suitable supplements for pregnancy. Best of luck."

E B replied: "I did the same.and i was fine.i had a healthy boy/Best ask your doctor though, to put your mind at rest."

Prednisolone side effects ? i'm suffering with maysethenia gravis the doctor first gave me mestinon but it doesn't seem to be working ... now he gave me Prednisolone and i'm shocked after reading the leaflet !! the side effects are so scary ! he told me to take one tablet daily but i don't think i'd rather to die actually ... if anyone have used it befor plz tell me what happened to u and whether u got side efects like : puffiness of the face, weight gain, hairniness, depression and thinking about suicide i'll be so greatful cuz i'm suffering with MG

Athene replied: "My Dad and my little boy who is three both got put on prednisolone last month for different illnesses. The doctor said the serious side effects usually happen in the first month so, if you get through that, you are probably alright. The likelihood of side effects is very dependent on the dose - if you are on a low dose there is a far less risk. Prednisolone is a really heavy duty drug and if you are scared, go back to the doctor to ask if there is any alternative you could try instead. Also go into a good pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to talk you through all of this. They have a degree in that stuff and they know far more than doctors do about medicines. You can ask them all the questions you like."

replied: "Weight Gain"

Sar replied: "short term: insomnia, weird dreams, fluid retention, weight gain, long term: osteoporosis, increased blood pressure, glucose or lipid imbalances. cataracts the list goes on, prednisone has many side effects and is recommended for only short term use if you are planning to be on it I would recommend starting calcium/vitamin D supplements"

Linda L replied: "I may be the wrong person to answer this question because I admit I am extremely biased AGAINST this medication. Doctors dispense it like Tylenol with no regard to the side affects. I have noted in my medical file I want NO steroids administered under ANY circumstances and have had doctors insist they would use it anyway---I found a new doctor! I have good reason. In addition to the issues others have listed, I became very confused, disoriented, lost ability to walk without a cane, seizure-like shaking, symptoms similar to having early Alzheimer's. I was on a low dose for 8 months before I finally convinced a doctor to wean me off---DO NOT try to stop on your own, it can be VERY DANGEROUS! When I was finally off, symptoms improved, but I still had major cognitive issues. Testing a year later confirmed I had permanent damage to my brain. I am now on disability unable to work. I used to be a teacher. Doctors refuse to admit it was a result of the steroids (malpractice?) but I have read documented, reliable information that this CAN happen. They have NO other explanation for the damage. Please be careful. I know many people use these steroids without long-term problems, but I'm one of those 1% they talk about who had disastrous results. My life as it was is gone, taken away by doctors not listening. While on them I was unable to express myself in a way that they would listen---I was literally at their mercy. Sorry to be a downer, but I try to warn as many as possible that this drug is NOT something that should be taken without a lot of thought. By the way, I was put on it for IBS--other options were available. Good luck, I hope this helps. Linda"

Cammie replied: "You can end up with medication induced Cushings syndrome."

When will prednisolone side effects GO AWAY!!? I have taken prednisolone steroid tablets regularly for about 2 years with doses as high as 40mg a day to as low as 5mg and back again. I have gotten very puffy from them with the moon face, weight gain, acne, stretch marks and buffalo hump. I was wandering how long after i stop taking them completely (fingers crossed for christmas...) will all the side effects GO AWAY! For example how long for my moon face to go back to normal again...Thanks very much for your help.

Dr. Patrick V. Suglia replied: "It may take several weeks for side effects to start going away. Some side effects, such as the buffalo hump, may never completely resolve."

Has anyone's child taken prednisolone and have side effects like these? my son was put in the hospital for they think the croup. he is 2 years old and just came home today. the peditrician gave him some Rx for prednisolone 15 mg. he got a dose yesterday in his IV and he has been acting moody and can't make up his mind and just wants to sleep. my husband put him in the bath tub early and he just sit there like he was drugged up. he didn't want to play just sit there. before he got that medicine yesterday he was playful and starting to feel a little better.

nicole h replied: "if it is that syrode stuff yes i had it a few yrs ago and it made me nuts.. very hyper and unsettled and just weird .. it made me swell up too. it does away fast tho"

ERICA L replied: "as soon as posiible get him off that drug, yes my son was born with the croup and he acted the same way, you may e mail me if you want to talk more, get your dr to get your son a nebulizer instead,do research and i pray he grows out of this"

Kitten916 replied: "Yes. I chose to NOT give it to him. He didn't really need it anyway and it made him wicked moody. He was only 11-12 months at time. You just have to decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks."

mindfullmom replied: "My son has been on prednisolone a number of times (he has leukemia). He just turned 16 mths and he has had many side effects similar to your son. We call it roid rage whenever he is on a steroid now. Sometimes he acts tired, irritable, or just down right angry. It usually takes a week or so after they are off the med for the side effects to wear off."

Help, Prednisolone side effects and my doctors disagree!? I've had intracranial hypertension and was treated by my neurologist (let's call him S) with Prednisolone for the swelling and a diuretic to combat the buildup of fluids. Now my head problem is gone, but I'm still decreasing my dose of prednisolone (2.5mg daily now) and I'm experiencing some strange effects: 1. I have random episodes where my skin turns red and itches like mad, on random parts of my body (can be anywhere). It's impossible to ignore. Then after a while it goes away on its own. 2. I get severe heartburn at night time (i take the 2.5mg of prednisolone in the morning). I got a second opinion, the second doctor (let's call him N) wants to increase my dosage of prednisolone to 15mg daily, taken as 3x5mg throughout the day, and says the effects are due to quick withdrawal from prednisolone. My first doctor (S) says I should continue to taper my dose and these effects should go away, and are an allergy. Who should I trust? N (continue with 2.5mg) or S (15mg)? Please help! Thansk to aWellWisher for pointing out the mixup. In the end I mixed up N with S. S wants me to continue with 2.5mg and N wants me to go with 15mg daily.

james2167uk replied: "http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/prednistab_ad.htm this is a full list of side effects related to Prednisolone"

aWellWisher replied: "In the last line you mixed up, S wants to continue with 2.5, N wants to increase to 15 mg. Anyway, I think first one is right, it is some allergy. You shouldn't increase dose of pred. now. Instead you may take some antiallergic with first doctor's advice. All the best!"

diane169385 replied: "i was on 80mg, taken in one dose first thing in a morning, for5 years , i had terrific heartburn and acid re-flux. my hospital prescribed me 300mg ranitidine tablet to take at night before i went to bed. they said prednisolone can cause stomach problems and you need ranitidine to protect it. i was on steroids for thyroid swelling, you have to be weaned off them as its dangerous to just stop. my consultant gradually dropped my dose , i was taking 16 ,5mg [80mg] i was dropped eg- 15 and half on day -15 the next etc, i was fine doing it this way. hope this helps you"

miss medic replied: "Hi, I have had an allergy to several of the steroids...mostly the inhaled ones for asthma, or the ear drops for ear infections. The cortico-steroid group itself, can have some REALLY odd side effects, as they suppress your immune system while you are on them (they are purposely referred to and used as immunosuppressants). Since, not totally sure if it is an allergic reaction, OR from the fast withdrawl, in this case, it COULD be both, or either, I would go talk to your PHARMACIST. Most people don't realize that they HAVE to know your medications, and either know them by heart---from being asked the same questions every day about "can I take THIS medication while I am on THIS?" OR, they look them up in their reference books, OR they understand the chemistry and lingo that is packaged in the original medication box by the drug maker. Hope this helps.....good luck to you. ps....our pharmacist helped up out here MANY times....that is how I found out that zyrtec is hydroxazine, but just a 24 hour version of it, so, that is why the different name. Nowhere did it explain that on the zyrtec website, just referenced once about people who HAVE had a problem with hydroxazine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first. no one realized it WAS hydroxazine...watched my husband have a really bad reaction from it, and the er docs failed to figure it out."
