can anyone tell me how strong ultram 50mg tablets are? I have a terrible toothache and can't get to the dentist for over a week, I have been taking hydrocodone 500mg's but it doesn't help much, so I went to the er and they gave me ultram 50mg tablets. I was wandering is this stronger than the hydrocodone? My toothache is really bad even keeps me up at night haven't slept in 3 days so is their anything I can take to help if ultram isn't strong?

ttpawpaw replied: "Ultram is a type of narcotic-like oral pain reliever that is often prescribed to treat low back pain. Ultram, also known as tramadol, was approved by the FDA in 1998 and acts centrally (in the brain) to modulate the sensation of pain. It is not an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) nor does it have the anti-inflammatory effect of an NSAID. Its mechanism of action is similar to acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol), but Ultram is a stronger pain reliever than acetaminophen and has a weak narcotic effect. There are stronger meds out there. Ultram for a toothache sounds strange. This type of drug acts best on longitudinal muscles, like those in your back. Actually a topical medication might work better, something like Oragel. The 500mg hydrocodone tablets you mentioned. There is something wrong. Are you sure it isn't something like 5/500 or 7.5/500. %00mg of hydrocodone is enough to kill a person. Standard strengths are 5, 10, 15, 25. I don't think they make anything over 100 and that is in a time release tablet. They are a much more reliable resource than the general public. Never consume alcohol while taking Ultram. Usual dosing for Ultram is 50-100mg every 4-6 hours, but this can be different depending on your age and medical history."
