Is it Possible generic Luvox cause weight gain water retention puffy face and so on.Damn SSRI'S? Are Anti deppressants SSRI's toxic to the body

Katie replied: "I know that since starting my SSRI a year and a half ago I have gained weight, although The positives it has done for me definitely outweighs the weight gain...to me it's worth the extra pounds"

Does abruptly stopping an anti-depressant make you gain weight afterwards? Anyone had this happen to them? I'm trying to figure out if that was one of the causes for me....because I was on Luvox but didn't gain any weight while on it. I always had high metabolism and I could eat whatever I want. After I quit luvox, I gained weight and now I have to watch what I eat or maybe it was something else that caused it. Yeah that could be it....I did eat a lot of fast food, but when I was 18..I could eat fast food and not gain a pound. I'm 24 now..so I don't know.

justme replied: "are you eating to feel good? some people use food as a way to feel better. if you abruptly stopped using anti depressants, the depression may be resurfacing in this way, and maybe other ways. Itd be best if you talked to the doctor that proscribed the meds in the first place. He/She will be able to tell you if this is a symptom of depression for you, and if maybe you should still be on the meds. I know that they usually want you to decrease off meds slowly, wean yourself off, so as not to shock your system. Definately talk to your doctor to be sure."

ktownfarmboy replied: "It's highly likely that taking anti-depressants DID affect your diet. For some folks, medication or depression itself decreases appetite. That's the case for me. It may be that once your bodily functions balanced out, your appetite returned and you simply responded to it by eating. It may take time for your appetite to level out as well. Exercise and eat consciously (watch how FREQUENTLY you eat and the QUANTITES)."

BumbleBee replied: "You are never supposed to stop taking an anti-depressant abruptly!!! That can cause more problems than just weight gain! What about discontinuing antidepressants? Antidepressants should be gradually tapered and should not be abruptly discontinued. Abruptly stopping an antidepressant in some patients can cause discontinuation syndrome. For example, abruptly stopping a SSRI such as paroxetine can cause dizziness, nausea, flu-like symptoms, body aches, anxiety, irritability, fatigue, and vivid dreams. These symptoms typically occur within days of abrupt cessation, and can last one to two weeks (up to 21 days). Among the SSRIs, paroxetine and fluvoxamine cause more pronounced discontinuation symptoms than fluoxetine, sertraline, and citalopram. Some patients experience discontinuation symptoms despite gradual tapering of the SSRI. Abrupt cessation of venlafaxine can cause discontinuation symptoms similar to those of SSRIs. Abruptly stopping MAOIs can lead to irritability, agitation, and delirium. Similarly abruptly stopping a TCA can cause agitation, irritability, and abnormal heart rhythms."

heatherz9 replied: "anitdepresents will make you gain weight but you should never stop a drugs such antidepresents without consulting your doctor and never quite them ubruptly!!! This may cause adverse reactions within your body. Hope this helps heatherz9"

darkandtwistedthoughts replied: "I never had a problem with weight gain after stopping my meds (Lithium) which I do often sometimes. But I was on Zyprexa last year and I put on about 40 pounds in 2 months."

How does anti-depressants/ SSRI's make you gain weight? Does it increase your hunger or what? Or do the pounds magically add out of nowhere lol? (sorry, I have no clue about this stuff). I'm going back on medication (possibly luvox for now), and will I be okay as long as I just watch what I eat, keep my calories at the required maintenance level and exercise on a regular basis? Sorry I mispelled my question..I mean how exactly do these medications make you gain weight.... Mike-what SSRI were you on, if you don't mind me asking?

Mike J replied: "The only reason the SSRI I took made me gain weight was the insatiable appetite it gave me. It was the first time in my life that I had ever been that seriously hungry (except for when I was a baby, mama told me). :) Just control yourself. If you find yourself eating more, exercise more. Make it work."

originalsmartie replied: "Depending on the medication, some medications block receptors that will stimulate your appetite and slow down your metabolism or incease your cravings for carbohydrates. Tricyclic antidepressants are ususally the worst for this. Check with your doctor for options."

Rob replied: "They tend to slow your metabolism. It is an unfortunate side effect."

stacia replied: "You will be okay as long as you watch what you eat, keep caloric intake at a healthy level, and exercise on a regular basis. Most weight gain due to ADs has to to with attitude more than actual biochemical changes. Often, priorities shift, depression lingers, people just don't pay so much attention to what they eat and let up on exercise. Been there, done that, not discounting it! Sometimes there's a little more to it than that, too, but you get the picture."

tears fall softly replied: "Sometimes antidepressants can make you gain weight... it is one of those side effects that is there. I am not entirely sure as to why they can affect your weight but I have some good ideas.... I believe that they can increase your appetite but some an also decrease your appetite. They may make you drowsy so that you may no be as active as you woul be with out them. Maybe it decreases your metabolism. I am not sure."

ADB replied: "I guess it depends on the medication, from my own and a few friends experience, prozac will suppress the appetite rather than stimulate it. If the meds cause you a problem perhaps the Dr can give you a different medication as the best solution?"

bassetfreak replied: "i think that the depression causes you to eat more and then the anti-depressants also increase your appetite. you don't really notice it, just find yourself craving sweets and all kinds of other things that are not healthy. not sure if it is the melds or the depression or a combination of the two. if you are wanting to exercise, watch what you eat and worry about your weight then i would really wonder if you need melds. most of the time people who suffer from depression don't worry or even care about those kind of things and if they are really depressed, they don't even care if they get out of bed, get dressed, and some people - unfortunately not me - don't care if they eat at all and lose a lot of weight."

Questions about Luvox CR for OCD? I just started taking Luvox CR for OCD three days ago, and I feel incredibly lazy. I don't want to do anything. I know it's only been three days, which is why I haven't contacted my psychiatrist about this yet. I was hoping someone who has taken it before could tell me if they've felt this way too. Will this laziness go away? I'm worried because I'm on 100 mg and I'm supposed to up the doze by 50 mg every week until I reach 300 mg. If I feel this lazy on 100 mg, what will I feel on 300 mg? Also, what are your experiences with caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, and weight gain while on Luvox? I will ask my psychiatrist about this stuff, I just want someone's opinion who has been on it before. Thanks.

jazz girl replied: "I've been on Luvox CR for about 5 weeks now for postpartum OCD. It makes me feel super lethargic. But.... it has helped me tremendously with the obsessive thoughts I was having. So, I guess so far it's been worth it. My psychiatrist said he might want to try a small dose of another medication (like Cymbalta) to give me more energy. There's side effects to every medication. I've found that you just have to choose which side effects are more tolerable than others. I haven't had any weight gain on the Luvox. I was drinking a cup or two of coffee every day for the tiredness but I have also had a great deal of anxiety which caffeine doesn't help. I don't know anyone on Luvox CR. I'd be interested in hearing how it's continuing to affect you."

luvox---HELP!? I lost about sixty five pounds and am now at a healthy weight. I recently had my dosage of luvox increased and I am experiencing some weight gain. Is this due to the luvox? I am currently taking 200 mg daily . I have visited lots of sites but some say that weight loss is possible, and others say that weight gain is. Answers, please?!

xCollapseofmyHeartx replied: "It's partly due to luvox; not more than 40% is due to luvox."

i have been on luvox and bad side effects have caused me to change and have been given effexor? i have been taking luvox for 6 weeks and the side effects of insomnia (am taking temazipan to sleep) and bad tremors as well as weight gain and agitation have not gotten better so am about to go onto start taking effexor and am wondering if it is a good anti depressant and what seems to be the best as i feel like my gp and i have been to three dont really know what to give, would you consider a phsychiatrist as i dont want to shange around too much the side effects are crippling and make it hard to function and work?

bluebird replied: "If you have not found the right medicine yet, please see a phsyciatrist. They specialize in finding the right combinations of meds to help you."

How do I obtain Tianeptine (Stablon, Coaxil, Tatinol) in Australia? I have severe generalised anxiety disorder including debilitating panic attacks. I have taken numerous SSRIs (Aropax, Zoloft, Luvox, Lexapro) and crashed off them all with side effects and severe withdrawal. Sooner or later, they are worse than the problem they are trying to fix. I believe that Tianeptine is much more likely to assist me without the weight gain, asexuality, sweating, emotional blunting, muscle tension and other SSRI givens. But Tianeptine does not appear to be available on script in this country. How do I get it? Is there anyone out there with similar issues with SSRIs who has been helped by Tianeptine?

ppg@btinternet.com replied: "try these two Ive ordered and received from these two without any trouble Tianeptine doesnt make you put on weight, in fact ive lost weight whilst ive been taking it"

i've gained about 30 pounds while taking luvox, seroquil, and clonazapam? has anyone else experiened this? and what did you do about it? I'm frustrated because i'm on weight watchers, i exercise everyday, ab toner, yoga and pilates, and can't seem to get the weight off. any suggestions?

Big Dude 4 Younger Swf Forever replied: "WELL, SEROQUEL HAS BEEN KNOWN TO CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN"

**Star** replied: "Hit the gym 5 days a week, it really works."

huggz replied: "I piled on loads and it took years to get it off again. The only thing you can really do is stick to WW and try and minimize the damage. Explain it to the group leader so shes knows that its a side effect of the drugs"

jaded_poser replied: "your shrink didnt tell you that weight gain is a normal side effect for certain drugs of that nature?????"

nancybuck8 replied: "Talk to your Doctor, maybe make an appointment with a Dietitian."

princess replied: "The combination of the medication that you are taking is going to cause you to gain no matter what you do. It's funny that some of those are anti-depressants, and yet they cause something that causes most women to go into a frenzy. No matter what though, the biggest thing for you to remember is that you are a beautiful person no matter what. I used to be on those medications, and know that there are probably some issues that you are dealing with. Don't let the weight issue bring on anything else. Just be happy that you are taking the initiative to take care of yourself. Many people are afraid to admit that they are not perfect, and I have great respect for you admitting not only to yourself, but others that there are things going on in your life."

riptide_71 replied: "Hi! I can sympathesize with you. I gained 70 pounds from my meds. And I eat healthy and exercise everyday. I never weighed more than 125 pounds until I started taking meds. It's hard to get the weight off, because I truelly believe they alter your metabolism somehow. Just keep doing what you are doing and remember that beauty is on the inside."

great listener/riend replied: "Well, I've been in your exact situation, was taking all different types through the years of anti-depressants, and then I couldn't sleep and they put me on Seroquil. My doctor, told me, and swears by it, that it doesn't cause weight gain, but, I gained thirty pounds the first month, just from lexapro the one that helped the most, which now I can't take, and everyone thinks I'm going nuts because I quit it on my own, which the dr. told me I could, and quit the Seroquil, because I was putting on more weight with that too, and not doing anything different. I don't care what the dr.s tell you, they all make you gain weight, well most of the time, was on Prozac, and gained a ton, but, my mom lost...go figure...but, I got off of all and now, having to go back on the 27th, taking forever to get an appointment and they told me to start the Lexapro again, and only after two days, I was so swollen, my head hurt so bad, pain pills from the reg. dr. wouldn't touch it, and called my dr. again, they said, stay off of it because I'm allergic to it now, it sounds like...so, I'm just sitting here waiting and waiting really irritable, my family/friends ect...just waiting it out with me, cause I get upset really easy and mad, but, not to the extreme of endangering anyone...but, let me tell you this, it's like a dr. a long time ago told me when I was on Prozac, he said, you do gain weight, but, you can get it off, it just takes people like us extra work compared to normal people...so we have to exercise, watch what we eat, and exercise...and eventually it will come off, that's what they say...but, I've lost weight being off of the meds, but, my family said, do you want to be pretty and slim on the outside, but battling this inside...is it really worth it...so, I'm waiting, dreading going back to the dr. cause I know I need the meds, but, don't want the weight gain, and they make me tired so I don't want to exercise...it's like a catch 22 effect...I'm either fat and calm, or thin and irritated....it's like there is no medium to it..cause if you are so tired from the meds, then you don't exercise, and if you don't take them, you arn't yourself...I'm not sure what Luvox is, but, still take xanex, not clonazapam...and that hasn't done anything to the weight...so it's the anti-phycotic drug doing it...we just have to learn that we need it, and we are not going to be slim and all, and get over it, which I'm like you, I don't like being over weight, but, the best thing I can tell you is, don't get off the meds like I did, and now, everyone is ending up avoiding me, and I'm fussing with my loved ones...who cares about the weight, we do, but, it's not worth the expense of not taking the meds if it makes us feel better...so, I'm trying to figure out which is the best one now...since I've taken and tried all, and lexapro was the best, and I don't sleep now, and have to get up early and I'm tired, because I quit the Seroquil, I'm going back to the dr. next week, and don't know what he'll put me on, but, I know, I liked the fat me better than the irritated me now, that's slimming down...so, just exercise talk with your dr. I've heard that wellbutrin is the best for not gaining weight, but, I can't take it...I'm so allergic to everything...but, don't get off of them,...stop worrying about the weight, and stay mentally healthy, and keep doing what your doing, and in time, I think you will lose the weight.....just don't do like me. and quit the meds if you need them...but, it is like that one doc told me, it's just extra hard for some of us on these types of meds, and we just have to stay at it, and exerise...watch what you eat, and drink alot of water, and in time, you'll lose it, I thought I would lose just instantly quitting the meds, but, it's taken me going to a weight dr. and since the week of Thanksgiving, I've lost 25 lbs....and that's when I got off the meds...so, even though 25 lbs isn't alot, it does make a difference, which I still have a long way to go, but, I was mentally better 25lbs ago with the weight than now...so, I know what you are going through, maybe we can motivate one another and lose weight together...good luck..."

KARA replied: "Are you taking all these drugs together.????let me say that these drugs tend to make you tired but for heaven sakes you are eating to many calories so stick with W.W. AND STOP BLAMING THE DRUGS KARA"
